I know Build 16 is still BETA but is supposed to bring the Camera to the status of so called a "production camera". That’s great and exciting. Thanks very much so fare… I really mean it…
But I have to say for me the long bootup time is still a problem and I know for a lot to doc and wildlife filmmakers it is too. I’m not in the position to push the RED developing team but still, like others before me, I want to make a strong statement for the need for the “sleep mode” function.
I read it is in on the list - Ok – let’s raise our voice that the “sleep / stand by- mode” will be part of Build 17. PLEASE – PLEASE - PLEASE

i made a similar point on the thread asking RED to release the Crossing the Line video. RED understands there is a demand for this function. People have been asking for it for almost a year now. The fact that it's still not in place means something is preventing it. A poll isn't going to make whatever the obstacle is disappear.
You can be sure that they're working on it in one way or another, and when it's working, we will be the first to know :)

Ok, you may be quite right there, but it may be also a question of preference and priority… let’s vote for it again…

Both of you get my vote on that. There must be some serious technical problem otherwise the feature would have been there for months, and image quality had to be an absolute priority to convince non-believers, may be. I'm in the next batch, and I shall confirm my order, and a sleep mode is vital for me, though. They said "no promise"... but there seems to be a preference at Red for surprise gifts rather than unmatched commitments, and they have already delivered so much more than simply expectable...And big Jim himself said "can't you wait until the feature is enabled".

since red is actually a computer it shouldnt be too difficult Both my pc's and mac's are pretty good at hibernating/sleeping. Only recently got a mac and I am amazed at how effecient it is when sleeping.
I vote YES i need to SLEEP soon

That's an accurate summary Brandon. We understand, but no promises.

As long as we're asking, can you make the sleep function somehow easily accessible so I can access it in my underwater housing.
...or how about a handheld ccu?

In the mean time just make a fat belt of batteries, and strap up. A friend of mine did it with a Beta Cam and 6 V-lock batteries. I think the camera ran for nearly 8 hours straight. You just need a padded belt and a whole mess of squat based work out routines.

Yoooh I know, a lot of batteries and a “hot swap” solution is the recommended workaround.
In time of need that’s what I will go for, but still, the situation is a bit dissatisfying.
“We understand, but no promises” leaves us in the air but with some hope, I guess…
You would make a lot of redusers happy, but you already knew that, right?... Oh well … now, with this pool you get the figures again… hope you don’t mind.

Over the past year RED has done an amazing job of with the new builds of bringing out the features I'll need to shoot with.
The boot time is still an issue so a sleep mode would be a great compromise. It gets my vote!
That said one of the most useful accessories for Canon XL's was the dual battery adapter/mount. This allowed two batteries to be connected to the camera. When one battery was exhausted the mount would automatically switch to the other battery - this had the added benefit of enabling "hot-swapping" of batteries and being able to run the camera all day without missing a beat. (fantastic for ENG, docs and concerts)
The technolgy inside the Canon dual battery adapter is really easy to build and I'm surprised that someone out there hasn't made a simple and cheap adapter that would enable such a function for RED batteries. The camera could then be easily run all day without the need for a battery change re-boot. Just hot swap (Oh! It's also easy to enable such a function so it will allow one to run RED from an external mains PSU and a battery enabling one to be able to unplug and move the camera easily inbetween set-ups without having a power disconnect re-boot)
I know I'm going to have a pop at building one when I get the chance.

No matter it's a Sleep or Stand-by mode, it's just a matter of Battery problems. Battery runs out then " SLEEP or wish It was " Stand by me )
I will add my T-Mount Battery plate for NO SLEEP or Stand-by kind of features on my RED one.

There have been some “hot swap” solutions mentioned:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/359201-REG/Switronix_GP_TS_GPTS_V_Mount_Hot_Swap.html#
Here is the “Swap Pack” : http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=11627
And this one:
Talk to the guys at Element Technica - They are working on a hot-swap battery plate
Don’t know what happened to the ET product
Mick made this hint:
The secret of this, and made by an audio company here in holland (http://www.noyzboyz.nl/) is that they take out the special magnet which is in the Red battery plates that will dispay the info on the battery. They than take a better and bigger battery plate (Hawkwoods) and combine this with a regulator and a special plug which will take over power when another powersource is connected. You then take another batteryplate or powersource with a full battery attached, connect it, take of the empty battery, drop in the new one, and disconnect the "switch" batteryplate. Voila, the whole day shooting without rebooting.....
A Dual battery system by Douglas Underdahl is discussed here:

Did I forget any?
Somewhere it also was said that RED will offer a “hot swap” – any news ?

Regardless of how the Red Team ultimately solves this problem (and I'm sure they will) the boot up time is intolerable. Battery changes happen all the time in professional filmmaking. You pick up the camera and move. You pull the camera off the dolly so they can put risers on. Right after the final rehearsal of the one-take stunt you get a low battery warning. Whatever. Stuff happens. All day long.
In all of these cases, on any modern film or HD camera, you swap batts, flip the switch and (at MOST) 10 seconds later you can roll.
84 seconds, or 68 seconds, or I might even propose, 30 seconds is too long.
Yes, we know it's a powerful computer. But nobody cares. Nobody on the set. Nobody cutting the checks for that production. They'll just remember that the Red One is the camera that takes too long.
Good ACs stay one step ahead of the game and are Zen with focus, media, and battery management. But sometimes we in the camera department will get backed into a corner where, darn it, we just HAVE to power down. And you can bet that by Murphy's Law that's just when the AD calls out "lock it up!"
So please, Red Team, make this high priority.
Cheers,
Harry
