View Full Version : Reasonable requests on EPIC - as seen on Scarletuser.com

After seeing and rolling through a thread at ScarletUser, I thought it would be nice if we started a thread about EPIC. I've seen threads here that you can find suggestions in, mostly posted by current RED ONE users, but I think it's time for one only about your best and ONLY the best ideas. I'll start. It's my best idea, but maybe it's still a crappy one.

Now I come from a weird background: to me this background didn't exist before September, 2007. That's because that was the month when I started high school here, in Hungary  :whistling: (horrible cinematographic performances in this country... with pretty few exceptions...)

Now at my high school we have a special "mass communications" class. That's (as most of you probably know anyway) sort of a long term for media (extended version...). We do quite a lot of things ranging from writing short articles through photography all the way to producing an entire youth-TV show for a local television channel, and we also make parts of the district's TV network's "grown-up's" news program. Also, sometimes if our school has a live event such as a parody show at the end of the year made by the teachers or anything similar which has a visual appearance, we record these events with two or three cameras always and we do this live sorta editing...when you're sitting in front of the DataVideo (or DFS-500 panel) and you're switching between the camera feeds (I'm not even sure what it's called in Hungarian and the English version doesn't pop in either). This happens to be my only real experience - I'm in my first year, so I don't get to do the TV stuff. But anyway, this is a lot more useful - from an experience point-of-view - than TV work (at our level).

Now I suppose most of you already know after reading this, that we are not that everyday RED user organization. And of course we don't use REDs at all. Our tools are Panny's DVX100s, and for our needs they're perfect. So my "big idea" won't have anything to do with RED experience.

Thing is, I am a big fan of what RED is doing with the whole motion picture production world and what they've been doing for the past few years, and when EPIC and SCARLET were announced, I was totally amazed.

Okay. Fin. Now for my idea.

<< IMPORTANT PART STARTS HERE... >>

I've read some posts about how people have different views on the control panel's position on the RED ONE; some say it's not comfy to have it on the back, some say it's good. But also, I read, that many want to see it on the "operator's side". I thought of a kinda interesting solution. Both the control panel and PERHAPS also the I/O interface could be separate panels. Maybe about the size of a credit card or a bit larger; and of course a lot thicker. Now what I thought of is that on the back and both sides of the camera there could be attachable interfaces for both types of panels (it might be good to have two spots on the back - you'll find out why later...) - little connection ports, which you can slide the camera-control panel and the I/O interface panel into. This would mean that if you are on a production that requires quite a lot of equipment mounted on the back of the camera, you could put your panels on the side. If you're in an environment where the space you have for your equipment is narrow, you could use the aft panel(s). Now this is where the two back interfaces come in handy: you can put both of your panels there, and so even if you have cables attached to the camera, it doesn't take up any place on the sides and you can fit the camera a bit more comfortably. This - IMO - would be something that would make EPIC even more versatile than it could become in it's current form.

<< ...AND ENDS HERE >>

The End.

One more thing... (Geez, I'm feeling like Steve Jobs...)

Poorly I won't become a RED customer for another ten years probably. This means, that if the guys over at RED do anything amazing - not just this idea but anything revolutionary or groundbreaking -, I won't be able to say thankyou by buying their product as many RedUser members probably can, although you can't believe how much I'd like to. So you can't take my words as if I would be some big cinematographer. All I can do if they become better is love their stuff even more :).
Also, I have no experience whatsoever with these cameras or anything bigger than Panasonic's HD ENG cameras - I had the pleasure a little while ago of using one of those for a few minutes. :) So please don't get mad at me if this idea of mine is a total mess. Ya know. Just brainstorming. ;)

Cheers,

Aron C.

SilentD,

I think a copy of those requests wouldn't be a full list. I don't think SCARLET's capabilities sould be at the same level of EPIC. :) Different market, different user requirements.

This is why I started this thread. Thought it'd be useful for those out there willing to share their ideas.

Oh, as Brook Willard said in one of his recent threads: "let's let the people make the camera". I think that's a pretty good slogan for this thread.

Big ideas welcome!

Cheers,

Aron C.

I want everything I asked for in my two most recent threads... :)
