View Full Version : CF cards bought on eBay won't work

A customer of mine bought these Compact Flash cards on eBay but the RED he was using refuses to format them.
There must be something we're overlooking, but we've racked our brains and we can't for the like of us work out what it is. They work fine in his Digital Still camera, and they're like Kodak, so they ought to know a thing or two about Digital Imaging, right?
What are we doing wrong?

You need to apply a tiny amount of tipp-ex on the letter immedeatly after the 8. Once it is dry, carefully use a Fuji pen to write a "G" instead.
That should fix it.
(Furthermore I am guessing that Plasmatic will reply with something along the lines of "Hey! No fair editing your original response!". Letīs see... :) )

Hey! No fair editing your orignal response!
OR re-editing your first edit to make it look like you anticipated my subsequent posts!
Oh well, I had you fooled for a few minutes anyway!

Those cards are not suitable for RED use. They are generic low-end rebranded Lexar cards which are pretty pokey. Your RED would probably come up with a system error saying "WTF?!". Ebay is also a hotbed of counterfeit memory card sellers.

They're also 8 megs.......hmmmmm maybe you can glue them together to make a hyper card plasmatic.....i'd recommend elmer's for 2500psi strength

Well even at 8MBs, they should be able to be formatted in the RED camera unless there's some odd provision in the camera software that prevents you from using cards that small. I wonder how much he paid for them. The shipping would cost more than the cards would certainly be worth given their age and low-capacity. Lexar hasn't made CF cards for Kodak in ages.

Fair enough. I think you're right. There must be some code thingy.....

Their is code in the later camera software that requires certified cards, but the cards you have are ridiculous to consider since they are 8 megabyte instead of 8 gigabyte. 8 megabytes would give about 1/3 or a second of red footage.

All right, all right, it was just a joke.
My friend found them in a box of junked digital cameras his son bought in a garage sale, and at first glance he thought he'd really hit the jackpot!
I must confess I didn't notice the "M" instead of the "G" at first either, but the "Copyright Kodak 1998" on the back kinda gave it away!
The eBay bit just added a ring of authenticity:tongue:
It does show how far we've come in just a few years, though, and I bet they weren't cheap when they were new.
Completely useless now, though.
I managed to find enough good parts to resurrect two 2 megapixel digital cameras. It's interesting that they appear to have CMOS sensors, because they give the same "Black Sun" effect that Red users were complaining about, and in the video mode they exhibit the same rollng shutter effect, although I found it actually ADDS something to the pictures.
The video and audio quality is amazingly good for such a small shitbox camera, plenty good enough for YouTube etc, and we thought with a decent sized SD card they'd make great "CrashCams" for the younger kids. But no, they won't accept anything bigger than a 64M SD card, which only holds a few minutes of video. Ya just can't win.
