If RED RAY had Blue Ray and we could archive footage to the disc this could be seen as RED's tape format.
Having a easy archive system as well as instant playback would be very cool.
Shoot RED 4k to the RED Drive or Flash, take it back to the studio and copy the data to the RAID, edit away.
Copy data from RAID to RED RAY disc for archive backup or send a copy of RED RAY disc to client as a copy of the rushes.
Is this what RED have planned for RED RAY?

I have done some research and it appears that Red-Ray is using standard DVD recording mechanism (red laser). It is not a Blu-Ray device. At least for now this is what Ted is clarifying around the world...

That was my understanding as well. Still you have to wonder: now that Blu-Ray is the standard HD disc media, and it holds a *lot* more than DVD-Rs, they might consider an upgrade?

Time will tell. Early 2009...

I think that including a Blu-Ray drive would be a good idea - they're only about AU$160 for a Blu-Ray/HD-DVD combo reader, with DVD burning here. But by the end of the year, I reckon a burner will be closer to that price (they're around $300 now I think)...
I think that it would be really worthwhile to include it, so you could use a dual layer DVD or have the option for massively longer playback time, or lighter compression. And I doubt it would really affect the price.
