Has any one tried to overclock their 2008 MacPro?

Overclocking of my MacPro (3,1) was
successful. It is stable at 3.185 Ghz
(I can reboot at will, perform benchmarks , etc.)

My $2,700 oc’d mac is faster
than the standard $4,300 macpro.
I currently get a Cinebench score of 21,500+ vs
Apple's stock 8-core 3.2 harpertown 21,354
http://www.barefeats.com/harper.html

Speed improvement was noticeable and significant.

I will do other tests for stability, but so far... it sweet :):)

I haven't read the fine print of the Apple purchase agreements... but...

Chances are good that doing this makes the warranty explode with an earth-shattering ka-boom... : )

Doesn't overclocking wear out components more quickly?

This is where the quality separates from junk. Apple almost always "under-clocks" their CPU's. Ever since G3 You could really squeeze up to 20% extra power without killing the machine...

Yes it does. On the other hand, I don't expect my computers to last a lifetime. 5 years is fine, by then they're out of date.

More pertinent is:
- crashing
- heat
- power consumption

You need to know what you're doing RE: RAM timings, motherboard, etc or you can lose more time than you save due to crashes.

I was running an OC'ed machine to render some 3D stuff 24/7 a few months back for movie main titles. Everything worked fine (really zippy because I was going from 2.4ghz -> 3.0ghz) - until you left things to render for days. It would crash every 5-6 hours or so. Each time I hit a crash I'd clock them down a little bit. I ended up being back at stock speed!

This was on a bargain basement $450 Craigslist PC, though. Looking at typical Apple overengineering, I'm sure you could manage a boost without problems.

Thanks.

Yes, I have noticed the crashes.

update:
While using Handbrake to rip 5 DVDs.
Leopard indicated a memory error 15%
into the first DVD; so i backed down
bus speed to 454.

Originally the bus speed was at 455.
After the adjustment no more
errors were logged by th OS.
