I got a shoot coming up. Red camera will be running at 23.976 according to the DP. The editor has not been hired yet so I can't ask what they prefer. So should I be recording audio at 23.976 or 29.97? This project will most likely end up in FCP. I have asked this elsewhere and have not received a definitive answer. Since all my gear (Slate & Recorders) is capable of 23.976 is there a reason to even record at 29.97? When the Red's footage gets imported into FCP, is the timeline at 23.976 or is it edited at 29.97? Thanks in advance.

My uneducated 2c: There is no definitive answer right now because we in transition. You should talk to your producer because you don't want fingers pointed at you later. Try to get SOMEONE on the team (post super? re-recording mixer? sfx super?) to back you up at least. Or get the advice of a reputable post house that has done a bunch of Red stuff. Reduser is not worth much when defending your decisions to producers.

I'd say chances are if it's a FCP project they very likely might want to be new-fangled and work on a 23.976 timeline. And they might very well ask for 23.976 audio. 23.976 also makes sense because there is no telecine step.

Of course for years we have shot film and recorded audio at 29.97 with no problem. But that made more sense when offlines were done at standard-def, 29.97 timecode tapes with 3:2.

Thanks Bruce for the info. I'll verify with the producers.
