According to Steve Gibby's article here http://www.studiodaily.com/main/news/7959.html the Jackson footage showing at NAB will have been graded. I'm curious about who did the grade, what software was involved, and how much time it all took. (obviously not a great deal of time considering the shoot was only a few weeks ago.)

Hey did anyone look closely at the slate on the RED page? If you look below Peter Jackson's name you can make out the name "Richard Bluck". I did a search and IMDB turned up this:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0089459/
So apparently he's the second unit DP for King Kong and the LOTR trilogy! Should be sweet to see what the images look like with a guy like him on board! :bleh:

Here's more. On the 'tentative shipping schedule' page it sez:
"Please note that the Peter Jackson/RED movie was shot with "Boris" and "Natasha" and NO feature was enabled except 4k REDCODE RAW recording to RED DRIVE. Monitoring was done with a 3rd party 720P LCD. The only button enabled was RUN/STOP."

If Jackson did the grade, then Pablo would've been used. If grading was done back at RED HQ, they probably used Scratch. If somebody out there at NAB gets a chance PLEASE ask about Apple's Color and how it will work with 4K Redcode! I'd ask both Red and Apple and see what kind of answers you get. Mike Curtis, I'm looking at you....:ninja:

Are you sure? Given that Jackson is testing RED, he is certainly keeping up to date with the technology. I wonder if he might be trying out newer software as well. On the other hand, for logistical & other reasons it seems likely to me this particular footage would be graded back home. This is sheer speculation on my part, though.

Maybe the decision on how the footage was graded belonged to Richard Bluck. After all, it would be 'his' footage... technical-spec wise...

I am sure they have dup. footage to work with on their own, but for RED and the NAB demo all other RED footage has gone through Lucas and SCRATCH. Why would they change with a serious deadline looming? Look at the gear they use page on red.com...

04-16-2007, 01:39 PM
you know, I think we deserve at least a photo of the booth with some known faces by now... those vegas people - they keep it all to themselves...
I dunno how many of you know this, but for a long time, Peter Jackson's been saying that he's been wanting to shoot a sequel to his ultra low budget horror movie Bad Taste (http://imdb.com/title/tt0092610/) for years, but that he'd only do it if he could shoot it on weekends with a tiny crew like the old days. I bet the Red will be a big help there.
In fact, if it wasn't for the inappropriatness of the subject matter, that could very well be the test footage.
I know from an American Cinematographer interview, from a few months back, that his DP on Kong and Rings, Andrew Lesnie, he has no aversion to shooting digital, it's just that there werern't any cameras that compared to 35mm at the time. Well, here we have it.

Yes, 500 GB would be 13 minutes of uncompressed 4k (8-bit RGB, 4096x2304 at 24 fps and using 1 GB = 2^30 bytes.) If the presentation was say 9:30 am through 1 pm though, hopefully there was more than 13 minutes of actual video?

I doubt it very much. 8 minutes is said to be the maximum time anybody will watch anything for standing up in an exhibition; no matter how interesting.

Whoops, just got back to a computer. Sorry for giving everyone blueballs, or blue....... ovaries? for the ladies?
Anyways, it looks like there are quite a few posts from people who are much better writers than I. It'll be nice for everyone to see some 1080P of the footage if they post it, but man, 4K is something else! I think everyone should be considering how long its going to take them to drive/fly to vegas from their current location and get a move on.

the Peter Jackson film was graded with the Pablo, edited with Final Cut and they used Redcine for playback on set.
The entire film will be online as soon as I have an extra second to export it out.

Ha! I knew it. It only makes sense. If Peter Jackson and his photographer are going to be shooting any of their planes and explotions... then it is obvious that they would handle all the grading themselves. This reminds me of a scene from 'The Insider' when Christopher Plummer's character screams at an editor "YOU THINK YOUR NIMBLE FINGERS CAN EDIT MEEEE!!!!"

I was able to get into the screening #2 here at NAB, and I have to concur with all the previous posts. I hadn't been able to attend the previous RED footage screenings, but I wish I had. The footage I saw today was jaw-droppingly gorgeous. I'm also incredibly impressed with Peter Jackson and WingNut films at their ability to produce a short film of this quality in just two days. Or maybe the credit should partially go to RED...
It just blows my mind that what I saw today (16min long) could be shot in a total of 500GBs of footage. That's TOTAL footage, at 4k. Combine the stellar performance by RED, and Apple's native support of 4k REDCODE RAW (confirmed by Ted S. and Apple.com), and it seems that all the pieces to this mysterious 4k puzzle are finally falling into place.

Interesting... It looks like Peter Jackson approached the Red team about trying out the Red One... and not the other way around...
From HDforINDIES.com:
"As you may already know, Red was approached by a director who wanted to shoot some test footage - so Red said OK. That meant spinning up Jim's jet for a nonstop flight to New Zealand to drop in on Peter Jackson.
Thinking he wanted to shoot some charts and stuff and maybe set up a scene or two, they showed up with Boris and Natasha, the two testbed cameras. Turns out he had a script and actors and extras and everything...and everyting included planes, tanks, shooting from helicopters, 'splosions, teddy bears, the WORKS."

We asked Peter, a reservation holder, if he knew of anyone in LA that could help us shoot NAB footage. He gratiously invited us to NZ to shoot NAB/test footage with him there. That really sums up why Peter is simply one of the best directors out there right now. He knows how to make an f'n good movie. Here's to RED and one of cinema's greatest!
EDIT: I am really curious as to how the movie was shot; was it more of a training/collaborative effort with the RED ONE with everyone trying out new things? It would be the ultimate learning experience to get to see some behind the scenes footage of that shoot.

Hi Gibby. Loved your articles in StudioDaily.com and your comments and posts on this site. Regarding the above... I would also vote for letting it slide since Mike has shown tremenduous stamina in keeping up with everything.
But there is one small detail. He hasn't corrected it yet. And now it has spread to AintItCoolNews.com (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/32338) where they quote him directly without citation. Thousands of people read that site and are now going to get an impression of something that didn't happen... something Jim felt strong enough to come here and post a promt correction himself in this very thread (like two pages back). Remember, the major news networks have been known to pick up stories from AintItCoolNews.
