hi all,

if PL mount is removed (to put on birger for example) will this affect the red one trade in for epic? it sounds like it's gonna void the warranty on the red.

thanks,

david

Hi,

Many cameras will be out of warranty long before Epic ships.

I think what he is saying is not regarding the warranty but the trade in potential of a camera that has been messed with (ie: its not as it left the factory). The fact that Red won't endorse it for warranty puposes points to the idea that they may not accept it for trade-in.

I can't figure out, what RED will do with all the old cameras, traded in for EPIC. Put them back on the market? Send them to the film museums of this world? Hightech products are old, when you get delivered them. Even if RED has this great upgrade philosophy, at least with the next sensor I think the whole entrails of our beloved RED have to be changed. And it will be easier, to jump on the next generation for both side (of course, I will keep my very first baby it's an honours)

If my logic is correct, they are going to refurbish and upgrade all the trade-ins with whatever the current tech is and then resell them to rental houses or resell them to the open market at a discount.

How cheap I wonder?

Hi,

Why would they want to sell them at a discount at the expense of new sales? Often a manufacture will destroy equipment traded in, pretty sure that is what Sony will do with the Vipers the took in PX for F23's.

Yeah. I think RED should end of life RED ONE's and build RED TWO based on EPIC technology. If it was me I'd just make RED TWO an EPIC with a smaller chip and be done with it. Shared parts for fewer upgrade and repair problems... and all the customers feel like they are along for the RIDE. RED is really a sensor and firmware company at that point. Actual cost of goods between the products may not be dramatically different.

$8K to upgrade to RED TWO which now sells for $25k, and 20K to upgrade to EPIC.

(if I was Sony I'd scrap everything and build a Scarlet killer for $2k that replaced 20 other consumer and prosumer models and get 'em in stores before Scarlet arrives. But they'll never do that. I think they'll rest on their ENG laurels.)

This is a somewhat academic discussion.

Keep in mind that a) all is pure speculation b) 100% up to Red Inc.(often confused with Red Digital Charity) to decide c) a year away d) subject to change

I guess the topic of the thread isn't though. If RED won't take a Birger mounted RED in for an EPIC then Birger is out of business 'cause it would ruin the value of the camera.

Why not just pull the Birger off and put the PL mount back on...?

well, apart from that being a bit dodgy / sneaky, i understood that red could tell when the PL mount had been removed....?

If Birger will come up with the mount collar that will slide on top, just instead of adjustable PL mount collar, the middle part with two big screws, then it looks like warranty will not be void.
Also it would give Birger mount the same adjustable capability as RED PL mount.
Sure his present method of adjustment, I have heard is very good as well, but this way we will not have to remove the last part of the PL mount, the one that attaches to the sensor

As long as the RED ONE is returned in working order with the mount it shipped to the customer with on the camera, it would be eligible for EPIC trade-in program.
