Just want to give a quick update on where I am with my mount design. and
mention that test footage is on its way, (Had a bit of July 4th holiday delay...) I am going to
post the most current info on my web site, so if your interested you don't
have to browse tons of posts to get the latest information.

www.andylesniak.com/red (http://www.andylesniak.com/red)

but quickly just want to say I am waiting on recieving my next prototype build. on July 11th.
hopefully this will be close to final... added the missing lens lock pin.. and need to make sure it works as planned.. not much room in there.. :)

(it's a pain when .25 mm is a big deal... heh.)

We're all hoping you can make this work, there are a lot of people right now dying for a canon EF solution, even one to get us through the next couple months.

tests are coming as soon as I can, I have a shoot coming up tomorrow so must prep..
I'll get some rolling tonight. setup a test scene and run some lenses thru.
exteriors might need a day or two. but I shall get to them.

at the moment I have to test with..

Canon 50mm EF
Canon 100mm EF Macro
Canon 75-300mm EF Zoom (yes the really cheap one...)
Sigma 14mm
RED 18-50 Zoom

shot some quick tests with the lenses I had, processing the r3d's now.. so should have something to post in a little while.
probably later this evening so I can gather everything, I did shoot side by side on a 1ds Mk2 so you can see the fov crop
you get from using a slr lens on the red. these were very un-scientific tests. but do show how the different lenses behave.

Here's a few quicktimes of some quick and dirty tests with some canon glass.
have a busy couple of days coming up, I plan on a more elaborate test setup possibly over the weekend, charts, real people, envrionments. ect.. also will be testing some L-glass.

I'll start the tests with the cheapest lenses I have. (right click save as)

this is straight out of redcine into 1920x1080 dpx, and made into h264 quicktimes, no editing, just raw footage in redspace.

Canon 50mm EF ($80) (http://www.andylesniak.com/movies/red/mount-tests/Canon_50mm_EF.mov)
Canon 75-300 EF Zoom ($175) (http://www.andylesniak.com/movies/red/mount-tests/Canon_75-300_Zoom_EF.mov)
Peleng 8mm Fisheye (in canon mount) ($300) (http://www.andylesniak.com/movies/red/mount-tests/Peleng_8mm_Fisheye.mov)

Interesting note, to set exposure I just set my 1ds mk2 to the same settings
as the red, let the camera set the fstop, then put the lens on the red, spot on... me likey... :)

where are the screws that attach it solidly to the adjuster - like the nikon mount?

And while I am here, what is the plan to set iris? I know you can use the preview on say a Canon EOS40D and hold it while you remove the lens - I have done it myself when we were testing the sigma full fisheye using the birger prototype in dumb mode. But it seems dangerous and wonder if Canon or Sigma are going to warrant it when we eventually fry one of those or the body.

Since this is a "dumb" mount, I don't want anyone to get any high expectations, first and foremost I designed it to shoot things I wanted to shoot, landscapes, locations that didn't require a lot of "on set madness"...
would I use this on a real production, I don't know, I had a shoot all today, from 8am, till now when I got home at about 4, all I used was the RED 18-50. which I feel is pretty amazing since I've started testing out my basic canon glass.. (basic... not L !!! the cheapos...) I can Imagine it will only get better... by the way the red performed flawless!!, as for shorting out the lens, I've done this about 1000 times so far and have yet experienced any problems. not saying it couldn't happen. just hasn't for me... I feel good that there are options available, that has been the spirit of the entire RED saga from the beginning. just want to add my piece to the pot.

The one thing that I like about this mount, is the fact that it would allow you to mount other lenses using inexpensive third-party adapters. Nikon, Leica, Contax, M42, what have you. And you could manually control the iris on many of those lenses.

So, it ain't all that bad, folks. Depends on what you want it for.

Haven't had much time to post and do tests this week, got called on a production, and it was back to back shoots, and trying to finish up vfx for a commercial.
but I will update everyone quickly... I'm waiting for a final prototype right now, looks like monday likely for arrival, then it's off to manufacture, even the prototypes "which are made from a bonded powder" are holding up incredibly well, I've been running around with those attached and haven't had any issues, so metal ones should be able to take bullets... well small ones. ;) I just tried out a Canon EF-S 10-17mm... gotta say WOW!
10mm is awesome, and tack sharp... great lens, I'll try to post footage soon.
looks like tomorrow will be a bit slower, so perhaps then... now it's back to the rat races...

Sorry for the delay, and big ass sorry for the lack of footage I promise to post, when it rains it pours, got stuck on a fast moving production.
So the only time I have I've used to work on designs and try to nail down a machine shop to make these on demand.
I'm happy to say I've got a working solution, and mounts should be about 20 days away. I'm working on getting a order page running by next week sometime...
more updates soon as I'm not traveling at the moment.

I like the 300mm shot... Not that it will show on an image 700 pixels wide, but if your goal is lens testing, you might want to open up wider than f/22 if you are looking for the best resolution out of the lens. ND filters are available for relatively little, or of course a higher shutter speed if you're just grabbing stills.

The 10-22 is going to be one of people's faves once they start using EF and EF-S glass on their Reds.

I have both the 10-22 EFs and the 17-85 EFs (besides of several L glass, including the 70-200/2.8 and 100-400 IS). Would this work with the 2x extender?

Andy Lesniak
08-05-2008, 04:27 PM
2x extender should work fine, I have not tried one yet, but will do. the 100-400 IS with 2x would be pretty nice to see! Also going to try to do some "wider" aperature shots outside, didn't have any ND's on hand so had to stop down severely. I have to say been super happy with the way my canon glass has performed, (look wise), now it's obvious the limitations when it comes to things like pulling foucus, exposure ect... but where there are problems there are solutions coming... :whistling:

My pore 100-400? I would actually pay to see it with the 1200mm - did You know that Jim is one of the few lucky owners? Actually on the Red One this lens would be the equivalent of 1920mm (if I am not mistaken), so with the 2x it will be 3840mm... You could really check the Martian's chicks on their nude beaches... :) ...but seriously - could You imagine a moon closeup with this combo?!?!?

Few of these lenses exist; Sports Illustrated magazine owns two of them, as does Canon Professional Services and James Jannard, the billionaire founder of Oakley.
