I'll keep editing it as new stuff comes in no problem, hopefully people at NAB will see it and know when we're missing out on stuff, must be hard to take the time to see what we're missing with all the posts. Makes you wonder if they know all the stuff we do actually! :)

I must admit, there isn't as much coming out as I had hoped, it's almost as if everyone thought someone else would report back and so didn't do so themselves. It'll all come out eventually I suppose.

They should put in a webcam and mic lol.

Jim and team has been just non-stop working. I got up to the booth line right at the start and it quickly filled up and non-stop line. Some people are even rough trying to get in. My jaw dropped with the Peter Jackson footage. The footage I saw in LA is nothing compared to this one. 2 days in the hands of people with big budget, wow. Now I know I will be the limitation. I'm so excited about the Canon EF mount! Yes!!! Erik, where are you?? Been looking for you but it's crazy here at NAB!

If anyone has any other questions they want putting on the first page just post em up here on in http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1591 and I'll update it next time I'm on.

Time for me to sign off too.

the red mini sounds very intriguing, there are many times when a huge camera is just too much, draws too much attention. cant wait to hear more details on this . I'm way happy that they are expanding their product line with 4k projectors and monitors, they are very much needed(or will be once the RED ONE gets out).

Oh My God. miniRED! This is hopefully what i've been waiting for. I'm a bit unsure at this stage though. I fear its just some kind of add-in or some such and thus not my dream "Little Pro RED". But i'll wait and see. :) Sound promising though! Can't wait for more info.

Paul, it says post #1 that the EOS adapter is priced at $500. This strikes me as too low since the much simpler Canon manual lens mount is $500. Don't get me wrong, I'd love it to be that inexpensive... and it's true enough that everything around Red seems to be constantly upsetting the price to performance ratio that the rest of the world is working with.

Peter Jackson and co. have produced a short for display at NAB. Footage of WWII planes, explosions, action, gritty story based sequence, is said to be amazing.

CORRECTION: WWI planes, not WWII planes. I don't know which planes - wasn't at NAB! Anyone want to fill us in? I think I saw an S.E.5 in some RedCine screenshots - which would rock! I am sure there will be no Tiger Moths (you know, that anachronistic plane instantly recognizable in lower-budget WWI movies due to the swept-back wings with fat fuel tank in the middle of the top wing).

Pocket Red! Pocket Red! Pocket Red!

Yeah I got the $500 from the FD mount in the store, I've removed it. Am I right in saying there are two canon mounts then? An FD and an EOS one with controls from Birger?

Updated a few more bits and pieces too.

Another 4 NAB questions:

1. What matte boxes are they using at the booth / do they recommend for use with the Red lenses? Did I see an Arri MB-20? I think I saw an Arri clip-on one too.

2. Similarly, how does the configured Red One work seem to with our expected front-runner smaller tripods? I thought I saw an OConnor in the pics - was it a 1030 or 2060?

3. S/N ratio of the Audio - mic / line inputs? How good is the preamp / DAC compared to a Sound Devices 702, for example? In know a lot of people will be using Red in tandem with an external mixer / recorder but how good is it on its own?

4. Even if we get no more info, can we at least clarify whether the Red Professional Pocket Camera shoots still or video?

I've updated the questions on the front Bruce, I'm almost positive the MiniRed is video. Think something like SI's 2kMini camera I'd imagine:

Bruce. I have had a look at the pix and all the matteboxes seem to be Arri MB-20s. Some are swing away, some are using the clamp on adapter.

Paul,
Thanks for all your work in staring this thread. It is just amazing to watch this revolution evolve and mature. I feel privileged to be a part of it. Have a question regarding the canon mount options. I have three Canon lenses:
Canon Zoom Lens EF 35-105mm 1:4.5-5.6
Canon Zoom Lens EF 75-300mm 1:4.5-5.6 III
Canon Zoom Lens EF 100-400mm 1:4.5-5.6 L IS
and am wondering if they will work on Spike with the EOS option Birger mount. I am getting the 300 and the 15-50 from Red, but would love to have the option to use these Canons. Any idea if they will work?

PaulClements
04-17-2007, 04:51 PM
Hi MVL, welcome to the forum, i'm no expert on Canon's but if the lenses work on EOS bodies (Which I think yours do) then they should work fine on the Birger Mount.

Thanks Paul. If anyone knows how these lenses will function on the Red, ie 2K & 4K coverage, quality, aperture issues, etc. I'd really appreciate some info. Thanks.

Mike checkout this thread from over at DVXUser/RedArchive a long while ago, it shows the visual sensor format comparison for different size lenses on the mysterium sensor.

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=64685

As you can see 35mm Still lenses are actually larger than the sensor, read the thread it's very thorough about the effect this has on your still lenses.

Similarly, how does the configured Red One work seem to with our expected front-runner smaller tripods? I thought I saw an OConnor in the pics - was it a 1030 or 2060?

Both the O'Connor 1030 and 2060 heads were used in the RED booth. The 2060 for the heavier cine-style camera setup (accessorized to the max), and the 1030 for lighter setups. If someone shoots a lot of heavy-accessory cine-style stuff, the 2060 would be a good choice. If they shoot mobile EFP and lighter-accessory cine-style stuff, the 1030 would be a good choice. If they shoot a mixture of both, having both heads would be a good idea.

Even if we get no more info, can we at least clarify whether the Red Professional Pocket Camera shoots still or video?

In my interview with Ted yesterday, which I used to break the news via web articles/blogs/RED User thread, Ted only said that RED would be developing a "Professional Pocket Camera". He gave no other details, and to my knowledge no other info has been released about that since then. My educated guess, based on no direct info about the camera functions, would be that it will be a small professional digital cinema camera, not a DSLR. Perhaps it will also have a dedicated stills function...who knows. I would also guess that when RED gets into active development of the pocket camera, that they will follow the pattern of seeking input from the prospective user community, just as they have in the development process for RED One.

I'm way excited about the potential for the pocket camera!
