with the trade in scheme for the epic, what will come of those red ones?

will you resell them as new or refurbished or second hand or will you just throw them out?

if you're just throwing them out, can you please tell me where you keep your bins? :D

Just look for the bin in the back of RED right next to this one:

If Red was to sell refurbished Reds that had been used to trade-in for Epic, I would definitely be interested. With the looming recession in the UK, times aren't the best and I've lost quite a lot of work over the Summer months. A refurbished cheaper Red camera body would make things much easier to justify :shifty:

doubt they would really sell them at a discount.. since they are basically taking them back in for 17500

Third world country need refurb REDONE for REDVOLUTION, can't stop it.
It'll take another 20 years to go!
Can't stop digital revolution.
One of my 16mm camera was my fathers that he bought 1950's.
Same thing, my REDONE will be my grandson's camera also.

It would be very decent (and probably tax deductible) if Red distributed the trade-ins to film schools around the world. Seems to be something that would be very much in line with what I perceive to be Red's corporate philosophy.

It would be a way to have the previously-loved Red Ones continue to do good in the world without diluting the market for the sale of new Reds.

i dont think film schools should have red.. puts too much emphesis on gear. rather than story telling

I would imagine you would start to see owners sell their RED one's privately. Some might want to purchase an entire new camera package and not have need for their 'old' camera package.

Interesting thoughts...maybe RED is trying to do what Apple is doing. Acquire a strong user base early (in college) and when the kids begin to do their own productions they will push to use the same equipment. I know that when I got out of film school I still wanted to have unlimited access to lights, grip equipment, Beta decks and Arris SR2's.

Would there not be an issue of support from Red for those that purchase second hand Red camera bodies?

i dont think film schools should have red.. puts too much emphasis on gear. rather than story telling

I have done a couple of films at films schools and they were both obsessed with their students using 35mm because it is proper film.

One had Panavision cameras on permanent rental. That is too much emphasis on gear right there if you ask me.

And what do you suggest they use? IMO, RED makes perfect sense for a film school. They can shoot and shoot and shoot and not have to worry about costs of film stock and developing that stock. RED One price point is lower than most 16mm and pro HD camera systems. Established film schools already have 35mm glass and support gear. The future is all digital...

Now I could see a film school doing rather well and providing a lot of tools for students if they had several Scarlets and one or two RED Ones.

Schools need decent gear, they need current gear. I personally would never pay money to attend a school that can't give their students access to current industry tools. If I'm going to just analyze films, read books and discuss, I can do that at home or at a coffee shop. I would also be a little upset if I paid big money to a film school and had to supply my own gear all the time or school only gave students access to prosumer gear.

Just my opinion, but who am I to really say all this anyway. I didn't go to film school, never had any desire to.

Why give them cameras at all? Unbelievable.

Well.. having attended more than one film school and knowing folks who attended the other major ones in southern CA.. I agree that learning filmmaking is not about the pro-level of the gear. Techniques do not require resolution. I'm all for any film school or even communications/tv school to have at least one Red One(or similar) in their dept for those select projects that should not be left to substandard formats. Nothing wrong with a school supporting their students in stepping up and making something for film festivals.

Not sure. I don't own a RED and I haven't read RED's purchasing/support/warrenty agreement (if there is one).

I agree with LilRed. For me film school was learning technique. For us though it was too expensive to finish on film so most everything was shot on video. So for film schools that don't have access to cheap labs or don't have a vid cam with adapter to learn lenses the Red would come in handy.

But as a part of every film history hands on class students could do a short 16mm and cut on a flat bed. (*the days of fun*)
