I heard people talking about Red left and right,

"Wait a minute, Oakley are making lenses?"

"What's so special about that thing anyway.."

One guy even called me a snob because I was carrying my titanium R

hahaha

I wish I was back in vegas instead of at work

Any reallife observations on that?

All I can say is that there was no line of people waiting to see the f23!!
I went to take a look at it, and besides being ridiculously costly, i find it bulky with the extremely large digital magazine. I defiantly heard more buzz surrounding Red then sony.. In fact to be honest... i didn't hear anything about sony when bumping into random people... case in point...
Sat down for lunch.. there were probably 10 dudes eating at the same area and we got to talking.. first thing they asked "so did you check out the Red?"..
No one was really on any sony kick.. Its obvious the sony guys were freaked out and are just makin stuff up to look good.
Out in front on the wall was a large sony drape that said "Real systems..Right Now".

I've got some great Sony and F23 pics and stories... including a photo of a very famous DP getting a run-through on the F23... I'll post them on this thread tonight.

I just want to say that at NAB (obviously) there is a strong broadcast element to the crowd. A friend of mine, who has long been a Panasonic guy, just got back from NAB... He made the round through the RED tent and all the other booths. He really wasn't all that impressed or interested in RED. I've talked to him on several occasions about RED and he just doesn't "get it". He's still all jazzed up about the new ENG package he's buying that's going to run him nearly $40K (Panny HPX500, 16GB P2 cards, 2 lenses).

I have nothing against him or his decisions. In fact, we have been great friends for over 15 years. The point of all this is that there's still a market and a place for other cameras. And at an event like NAB there are a lot of people who will still find a better fit for their work with a different camera system. And a great many of them are not going to understand 4K or why they would want it. Assuming they can make use of it to the same extent that they could with something else... Lots of factors at work here, including client or employer expectations, format exchange, established workflows, etc...

I gotta say that, as a fanboy of Genesis (and almost all things Panavision), I have a soft spot for the F23. Damn, they've just about got it now.

Presently, the pricelist for the lump is a sad and unfortunate read. Lemme see - two REDs (twice-baked, fully-loaded with green onions, baco-bits and sour cream) or one SRW1 deck? Think, think...

Jeff,

you are right about the different markets and if you work freelance ENG you have to give some kind of media (tape, disc, ...) to the broadcast company at the end of the day.

... but then, why is your friend getting a HPX500?

I don't know why he's getting the HPX500... I think it fits his immediate needs and fits into his budget (or that's what he believes). Hard to say for sure, but I didn't quiz him on it and make him justify his decision. I just told him he'll be sorry when he sees my RED in action and left it at that.

Whoa, just the viewfinder alone is $10.000
The SRW1 is $64,500.00 with VFR option.

Wow, it's like Sony thinks they're RED.
