View Full Version : No DNxHD through REDrushes?

SO I'm working with the newly released REDrushes but the Avid DNxHD codec doesn't show up in the codec dropdown menu ... the new REDCine build does show DNxHD as an option (though no option for 36, there's only one) but no in REDrushes.
Anyone actually seeing DNxHD in REDrushes or info on why the codec doesn't show even though it is installed on the system? This isn't very welcome news!

Michael P said in another forum that they are diligently working to get DNxHD output to REDRushes and it is close and they are all committed to it. should be soon i suspect but i have no specific info.

I believe RED Alert has never offered DNxHD support. I believe they use hard-coded media support rather that the Quicktime's component/codec support, as the codec selection is very limited in RED Alert and REDline.

We've not enabled DNxHD because it's only been outputing noise up until now. Michael will have a new version of the codec soon that fixes this problem. The next version of RA/RL/RR should have it enabled.

Hey Deanan, I love you by the way. And Michael.

Does red rushes have as high quality debayering as Redcine and Red alert, or is it primarily for offline?
Thanks

I haven't really looked at it yet, but from the description I would say it is more or less an interface for RED Alert (or it's processing features, a la REDline) so it will be the same.

REDrushes uses REDline to render and REDline uses exactly the same code as REDalert.

Interesting since it works in REDCine.... so do those two apps render in totally different ways?

It wasn't working in REDcine either for the same reasons. Michael posted about this elsewhere. However, you're right, they do render very differently
as one is cpu and the other is gpu.

I see... just as an fyi, I updated REDCine yesterday and DNxHD was available as an output. I didn't try an export but the codec did show up.

I am travelling this week in LA, but I need to get an update as to the QT Codec being updated on Avid.com. I will check today and report later when I hear something.

Michael,
Any updates on the DNxHD issue for either RedCine or RedRushes? I'm want to push a client to abandon 35mm and switch over to Red for their next big ad campaign and right now the DNxHD issue is our only stumbling block in post workflow.
Thanks,
Jon

I have not heard back - I know the new Avid codec was being tested by engineering. This will allow RedCine to make QT wrapped DNxHD, but only in the one flavor. The ability to choose which data rate is still not available.

not being able to pick the data rate is a killer.
That said, WHICH data rate is the default? 115 or 175?
Jason Diamond

well it was 115 before so that may not change.
175 would be awesome.

According to the code, it defaults to the first one in the list which is 175x (10 bit).

Is there currently any way to go to a DNx HD quicktime? Some kind of ProRes to DNx HD transcoding application. Compressor does not seem to have that option.

RedCine alows for a sngle choice of DNxHD QuickTime at this time. Work is being done to allow the full selection.

Michael,
I'm still getting noise when I compress to DNxHD out of RedCine. Am I missing an update? I thought I had all the new ones.

The QT codecs are part of the v.3.0.5 release which I beleive is next week. The same QT codec will posted on Avid.com for systems that do not have the MC installer.

if i needed to get a select number of clips from .r3d into dnxhd codec, with a look applied to the clips, what is the best quality way to do this TODAY?
i am fine to use either redcine or red rushes....just looking for the best solution out there today. i need to give some clips to an avid editor so he can then work with them.....
redcine or red rushes???
