View Full Version : About disabled features before October for the first 1000 units

Since we already expect that not all the features will be fully enabled by now...
1) ...what does this mean regarding to:
1st delivery round (by June -- serial #13-100)
Partially enabled feature set?
2nd delivery round (by July -- serial #101-300)
Partially enabled feature set?
3rd delivery round (by August -- serial #301-550)
90% enabled feature set?
4th delivery round (by September -- Serial #551-1000)
98% enabled feature set?
Isn't it just the record RGB options the only option to be disabled? Will there be others like the Graeme's magic focus assist for instance?
2) How shall the features be further enabled? By firmware?
Will it be an easy task? Just a firmware update?
Or will it be necessary to ask for RED support over the hardware?

That's all going to depend on what's ready when. We know that the first cameras won't have RGB or audio recording available.
Unless something's changed.
Firmware updates should do it. Unless something's changed.
Edit: audio recording should only be disabled for the first 12 cameras... fear not.

We know that the first cameras won't have [...] audio recording available.
I guess this will change the plans of a few people who were planning to shoot features with a Red this year (including me).

Separate audio recording? Traditional way, sound guy + clap board?
Why not?
Nice old/new style mix.

If you are doing a feature film... yes.
But for most other types of projects, like nature photography and docs... very impractical.

RING-DING. Bring out your DAT. RING-DING. Bring out your DAT.
Sorry poor joke.
Just a point when trying/testing out a new camera or camera technology I always have a back up audio recorder anyway to cover for any "drop-out" type problems that new technology can throw up.
The traditional way of recording audio for films was born not just out of a technological need but many, many years of production experience so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
(and if the no-audio is true the firmware upgrade will resolve this issue soon enough anyway)

More like bring out your Nagra.

RING-DING. Bring out your DAT. RING-DING. Bring out your DAT.
HAHAHA.
I guess I'm a nerd, cause I thought that was funny!
It's interesting to see how some sound guys will run a backup DAT while direct recording on one of my HD cameras. In my opinion, smart and why not? Except that if there's an issue with the tape then oops; no picture either (but most of the time I run both Firestore and tape, so I guess I'm backed up too)
In some ways the "old way" was indeed better. Having a tether really is not fun... and clapped head slates can be avoided by Aaton or Arricode, or in the case of HD, by jam-syncing time of day. Obviously it's of great help to the editor to still do a little insert slate anyway.
Along the lines of the tether, I wonder if the Red team might turn their brainpower towards an inexpensive version of the fibre-optic interface boxes that eliminate cable clutter on a traditional HD shoot? They work OK now I guess, but in the beginning were plagued by bugs and remain large and expensive.
A one-cable solution to an interface box somewhere out of the way on the set really speeds up moving around, especially on a practical location.
Cheers,
Harry

This is just what I've been told. I could be completely wrong... don't count me as a source of authority.
But time will tell. The prototypes appeared to have a menu system for audio control already. Does that mean it'll be ready to go? I don't know.
I'll try and find out more today.

Everyone relax- sound recording IS targeted to be included after serial number 12. RGB will be one of the last features enabled... mainly because we think everyone should be shooting REDCODE :-).
False alarm here.

Thanks, Jim. I knew I'd heard it... I just didn't know how many cameras it covered.

No problem, Jim. I plan to shoot Redcode, edit Redcode (in FCP), eat Redcode, sleep Redcode.....

I think so too! With the combination of REDCODE being visually lossless, REDCINE looking so good, FCP soon being able to bring in REDCODE. plus the multi-resolution timeline options, do people still need RGB recording in camera?
If Red dropped RGB in camera completely and decided to focus their energies on 120fps 2K RAW REDCODE recording instead, I think many would prefer that.
If Red offered 120fps 2K RAW REDCODE recording, the only reason I'd use Red RGB would be if it were a superior editing format to ProRes - the ways I could see it beating ProRes would be through:
- cross-platform compatibility
- alpha channel support
- file size
- quality
- lower CPU usage
Anyone agree? I know that Red wants to deliver on promises of RGB-ness, so this is probably a pointless topic. I did raise it on the Red Mini post though, where I guess it is more appropriate.
Happy NAB! Happy RED!

Man, this just goes to prove how some little flawed information can snowball on these boards. Again, I am thankful that Jim and crew are taking the time to put out fires here on Reduser.com.
Speaking of putting fires out... Does anyone from the Red team realize that the domain registration expired yesterday and that now a lot of people are having problems reaching this site? I had to hunt down the numerical address (http://205.234.134.160) before being able to get here. Under Reduser.net a generic page appears.

WHOOPS! Yep it expired yesterday (4/16)... A lot of ISPs are going to be losing track of this site as it gets dropped from their DNS tables.
...Better let Jarred know.

Heheh, just remember... it was "accurate" information [first 12 will lack audio temporarily] but just not specific enough [didn't say which cameras]. If anything... it teaches me to be more specific and it should teach you guys to take deep breaths before exploding. :)
