I already posted this under a less sexy threadname and I got zero views, let alone a reply. So here I go again:

Ted seems to have said 4K is perhaps not available in the first cameras!
I thought the first ones would only be lacking RGB and audio, but it wouldnt lack 4K alltogether!
It sounds weird to me, as all the prototypes so far were able of 4K.

Was Ted perhaps talking about Apple's support of 4K instead?
Anyone?

Reduser goes high concept :)

I did read your other post. I think the server compiles 'views' counts on a cyclical timer. So it will read 0 for a while and then suddenly jump to 16 or 234 or whatever. Regarding your question, I am pretty sure the first cameras will be able to shoot 4K. I think Jim himself has posted this a few times (don't ask me where since this forum has become a nightmare to keep track of in the last 24 hours).

OK, I figure they just misquoted Ted on this.
This would of course be food for naysayers, so I hope Gizmodo will will try to reinform themselves on this.

dude, I read that to.
Thought it was quite ironic as he seemed to post the story at N.A.B.

4k in camera or not...I would tend to think there is, or Peter wouldnt have been able to do what he was able to do, but who knows.

Probably the guy wrote (pre) before N.A.B to be published at N.A.B, and just did not edit that portion out.

Ya, there's so much going on and such a rush to publish online these days that mistakes are made.

All cameras will ship with the capability to record 4k REDCODE RAW to RED DRIVE, view on the RED EVF or LCD, and have shutter options from day one. Record RGB options will be one of the last options to be enabled.

Please note that the Peter Jackson/RED movie was shot with "Boris" and "Natasha" and NO feature was enabled except 4k REDCODE RAW recording to RED DRIVE. Monitoring was done with a 3rd party 720P LCD. The only button enabled was RUN/STOP.

If anyone wants to cancel their reservation, the refund goes as follows:

Serial number 6-750 = $1200
Serial number 751-1500 = $1100
This schedule has been updated on April 9, 2007

It's 4k from the get go. Even Frankie, Spike, Boris and Natasha were 4k. I think the confusion is over FCP's "delayed" ability to do native Redcode at first, and the first few Reds having limited functionality with respect to recording options. But you'll get silky milk chocolate 4K footage of your livingroom walls and coffee table as you ogle your new Red!

the only thing i remember hearing/reading from ted regarding no 4k was that final cut studio won't initially support 4k editing when it ships. sounded like an update would soon fix that. can anyone find a quote?

I'm hoping Adobe steps up and supports 4K on both Mac and Win. I remember last year when apple demoed 720x24p support at the JVC booth, and look how long it took them to actually implement.

Of course RED is 4K in the camera. Redcine fully supports 4K. Peter Jackson shot in 4K.

If there is any confusion, it must be Apple's FCP support for RED to Pro Res. But there native support to REDCODE RAW is 4K.

Just to confirm... 4K will be enabled in every RED ONE they ship.

[dammit, Jim beat me to it...]

Thanks, guys.
What better way to be reassured than by the man himself?
I'll ask the Gizmodo guys to recheck their statements, before it leads to any more unnecessary confusion.
