View Full Version : Dropping frames all over the place on CF cards

Hello,

Maybe someone has experienced this one, or have some wisdom. Camera is dropping dozens or hundreds of frames when recording to CF cards. (i.e. the Drop Frame counter goes off during most shooting, and when bought into Redcine there are black spaces where frames were dropped). It does not have the error when recording to Red Drive, ever.

• I've tried 4K 2:1, 3K 2:1, 3K 16:9, 2K 2:1 RC 36, 2K 2:1 RC 28, with similar problems. Shutter speed 24.
• I will occasionally also get: Recording Error: Codec Fault (2K 2:1 RC36)
• I called Red, and they advised me to Restore Factory Settings (System Menu: Setup: Maintenence: Restore, select system, look, user). No luck.
• I use the Lexar 8GB 300X UDMA cards. I've tried cards purchased 4 months ago, and a batch from last week, with same results. Might suspect the cards *BUT* I had rolled all sorts of tests on these cards with Build 15 without ever getting a dropped frame).

Config: Red #1267, Build 16 v 3.2.1 (Most Recent Beta), Running on Red bricks, Small Red LCD, nothing else (ie no steadicam, wireless ff, nothing).

Thanks,
Morgan

Hi Morgan,

Are all the cards Lexar or are there any RED cards?
Also, can you email me a log file?

Thanks.

** Or not... See below**

My bet... your cards.

Larger capacity cards have been around the whole time. Why have we not been using them? CONSISTENT write speeds, or lack there of.

You say they worked fine with build 15 but not now with 16. I have rolled countless takes with B16 to cards with nary a dropped frame. Those cards would happen to be RED cf cards.

Just my two cents

My bet; not your cards....
I am shooting B16 with Lexars 300X for three weeks now without any problem, all speeds, all formats.
My bet; your card reader or connectors to it, since the drive works fine.....

Good luck

In an impressive display of Saturday customer service, Deanan replaced my CF reader and all is well in all recording modes. So it was the reader, not the cards.

Thanks, Red.
