This looks like a clean five to one. Appears to have a PL on the lens and an Arri S/B and Panavision mounts too.

Not a bad lens, they probably ought to have listed it before yesterday to get the price they're asking. I'm thinking the $6500 18-50mm Red Zoom is going to lower the prices on many of the 20-100mm's a little. They are bigger, heavier, older, second hand, 35mm (Not S35... I think anyway) and don't have the all important color matching properties to the S4 lenses that it's 18-100mm brother has.

That said however, they are a tried and tested lens, people know what they are getting with it and will happily use it. More people might prefer to see a Cooke lens on a RedOne package than a Red Lens that is essentially untried and untested.

Disclaimer - If it's your lens Chuck then I think it's beautiful and worth every cent and then some :)

Hi Paul,

No it's not mine (wish it was). Stephen says they cover S35 if you remove that piece on the front. They are heavy, but that is do to the quailty of the mechanics and the glass. The internal construction makes them a lens techs favorite to work on (easy to adjust tracking and optical spacing of the variator and compensator groups).

Hi Chuck,

I think that one may have had the front modified, so may well cover S35 as is.

In your opinion fellas, would you pay $5000 for the cooke or $6500 for the red zoom?

Personally I'm looking at the red as more favourable, I don't know about others, it just seems to be a more useable size, weight and of course you can rely on it being in perfect condition.

Hi Paul,

That would all depend on the quality of one lens compared to the other for a given focale length range.

Get off that fence :)

I'd go with the cooke 18-100mm over the Red zoom, I just don't think the 20-100mm at $5k+ seems as good a value is all.

Hi Paul,

Without comparing the lenses back to back it's impossible to say. FWIW I paid a lot less than 5k for my Cooke 20-100. Not much breathing with the Cooke, but I don't know how it look on a RED.

No way.
5k for a used, old, a little dirt, ex-beautiful lens?
Maybe I'm wrong, for sure I'm wrong. But I prefer my brand-new Red zoom.
New, newborn, superclean, modern.

My 2 cents.

Hi,

Have you ever shot with Cooke glass?

Something to bear in mind, 5k is just the starting price there is a reserve too. There is a zoom motor included in the sale, looks like a Heden, so that has got to be worth $500+

Hi Martin,

IMHO it will never get a bid on Ebay at 5K, the highest I ever saw one that sold went for $3500. Rental companies will happily sell to you direct for 5k.

I agree. 5K seems way to high, especially for a starting price, I was surprised when I noticed it had a reserve which I presume must be significantly higher.
