View Full Version : Was the Apple RED video shot with a RED?

I'm referring to the Apple video promoting Final Cut Studio and its integration with the RED:

http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/action/?movie=red

I noticed that it seemed unusually crisp and had unusually strong depth of field effects, so I was wondering if they used a RED prototype to shoot it. It would seem only logical to do that, but I noticed no information about the equipment used to shoot it.

Either way, I'm awestruck by the RED camera and all the great hard working people that have made it this far. A round of applause for them and Jim Jannard, to have the guts to follow his dreams.

I can't afford a RED camera just yet -- perhaps by the time the RED Mini comes out, I'll be able to buy one :-) -- but rest assured that I'm cheering this project from the sidelines.

Varicam.

Jim said so... Sorry I don't have the link, so much thread traffic the last couple days, it's hard to remember where everything went. :)

I am actually going to guess that no, they did not shoot that video on a RED. Why do I say this? Well, when you look at the milk girls footage, it looks quite different than the rest of the footage (of course the darkness of the interview footage could make a difference.) The milk girls has a smoothness about them that looks like film, while the rest of the stuff looks more like contrasty varicam footage. If the interview stuff is RED footage, then please turn down the detail/sharping!

I think Graeme is gonna' feel bad that anyone would expect such over sharpened footage to come out of the red camera :-)

Even though it was the Varicam, a lot of that sharpening had to happen in post or they dialed it way up on the camera. Not quite sure why they went so overboard with it, unless they were trying to bring out some of the finer details on those screen shots, maybe?

Yeah that "Sharpen Edge" slider in Compressor is dangerous. Should be renamed "Video Look" instead :-)
