2336 here - I haven't heard a word about shipping yet. I'm wondering how long we will have to wait since other in a previous sub-batch hasn't received tracking numbers yet.

Not a problem. I actually asked them to postpone the shipping of mine a couple of weeks if possible.

Sorry to hear you have to postpone your shipment tlorenzo  I was told it would either be end of this week or next week for shipment verification.

Cameras in #2201-#2400 started order processing on Monday, starting shipping Wednesday, more went out yesterday, and more are going out today. And more this coming Monday...

You get the picture :)

Yeah I was told I was top of the queue, but apparently I wasn't since my rep just told me my camera would "probably" ship sometime next week. Too bad I lost two weeks of rental - would have been great to get that turnover while being gone.

Hey brent,
Is there any update you can give us if this batch will come with drives?

I just had an issue that just got resolved today. Hopefully my gear will ship by tomorrow. I have a 3 week rental coming up on Monday of next week that i hope i can make!!!

Guys, make sure you leave plenty of time to test your cameras and make sure everything is perfect.

I know guys who waited a few months before letting their cameras go out.

Also make sure you have an experienced DIT who knows it inside out and all the workarounds.

We need to take care of RED's reputation as they have taken care of us.

Just my opinion of course.

The AC is the one who brought the job to me recently who knows the camera inside and out. He will be on the job with it so if any codec errors appear or anything out of the ordinary he can help as he is quite familiar with the in's and out's of the camera. I will also be on the job with it occasionally throughout the 3 week shoot and its not the first time I've worked with this camera to say the least.
If there is a problem internally with the camera, well, I'm not going to not put it out there on the job because I'm afraid it will break. Build 16 is a release build now and I feel comfortable putting it on the job with other experienced RED crew. If shit happens, well, what can you do? Could happen with any other camera out there just as easy as with a Genesis, F23, or any other electronic cam. I am respectful of RED's reputation but bottom line is its a functional camera that should be treated that way and used when called to duty! Putting it in the hands of qualified people is what's really important and with that, I am comfortable.
Would I like a little more time with my new baby to get to know her before another man puts his hands on her....without a doubt....but money has to be made and what better way to break it in then on a feature?

fair enough! It's just the little things like the battery plate cutting out and temperature shutdowns that have given the naysayers ammunition that I'm sick of hearing.

Glad your AC will be there to put out any fires, that should help.

What are people doing regarding LCD for onboard monitoring? My camera is shipping this week with no LCD or EVF...in the hopes that one of them comes in soon. I have on order both the 7" PRO LCD and EVF. Both could be a month away or longer...should I just get the 5.6" instead, or try to hold out as long as I can?

I understand completely. As a soon to be owner, I want people to have a great perception of the RED camera and workflow and feel comfortable and confident with it on set. Anyone experienced with the camera and post workflow knows you don't go into battle under prepared. Appreciate your concern and looking out for RED and its potential users.

You just answered your own question. ;)
If you can wait for the 7", do it. If you can't get the 5.6" now and sell it when you get the 7".

The Red 5.6" is by far the best on-camera monitor I have used.

It is so easy to learn .. don't panic or cofused it is a simple PC cam :)

David Wilson
08-23-2008, 01:47 PM
Tony,

I would agree with BASSAM about being easy to learn. I'm coming from shooting on a HVX200 and would say that the menu layout and general camera negotiating is even more intuitive than that good camera was.

I would say thus far (After just a week this is), the camera is like Photoshop. When does a person say they have finally learned Photoshop?

I have found it not so difficult and quite natural to learn to ask the camera to do what I need it to do but I think I will continue to be learning to use the camera as long as I own it.

It has certainly been a splendid adventure so far... Now, back to work.
