I'm wondering if any of you guys know which brand or model of portable GPS device has the best maps for back-country camping - especially US forest service roads, fire roads, etc?

Tom, maybe you want to take a look at what places like US Cavalry or Brigade Quartermasters have. That'd be a start. Then take it from there and do your own research. Just a thought.

It looks like the software is really the main thing. For some reason, a lot of these seem to be divided between "driving" and "outdoors." I wonder if there are any good, cheap, portable driving GPSs that also can do detailed topo maps for hiking and outdoors stuff? The Magellan Crossover series looks like a possibility.
