A guy came into our booth and said that one of our "big" competitor's sales rep had said that RED had hired paid actors to stand in the line around the RED booth to make it look like we had a lot of interest in our Peter Jackson footage. Pretty funny.

Actually, it was me - desperately trying to hype the value of my Red investment. So you're home free Jim, I confess!

Thats what the Beatles promoter did for their early performances--have em scream in the front row. An old marketing trick. Its nice to see its REAL INTEREST at NAB that is drawing the crowds!

Yeah, actually I heard Jarred and Jim are really just digital characters made up like in the movie Simone. Unfortunately Al Pacino isn't behind it this time though. :sarcasm:

Actually it was Peter Jackson's doing.

He wanted to see if WETA's "Massive" would work in a live environment.

Ah, yes... another successful example of "Virtual Reality"

Congratulations Jim, you deserve to be on the cover of Time Magazine for starting a revolution in the film industry -

Jim

This is truly unfortunate if he was serious...and sad.
I mean who would believe that red hired actors to generate hype...Peter Jacksons name is big enough.

and all the talk of 'disbelief' in red over the past year...quite ironic...people have a true lack of vision. If someone has the money and the interest, they can make it happen...they act if they expect the 'investor' to know the ins and outs (not that after this process you dont), but thats why 'teams and companies are bought and hired'.

So all these comments really show level of thinking that doesnt reflect that much experience - or dream - at least the understanding that the sky is the limit when the resources are available.

enough said. :)

Peace

Just got back from Nab tonight. I saw Red's booth on Monday and Tuesday. It was opposite of most booths... brilliant marketing. Where as most booths are open and advertising what they can offer you, Red had a closed off military, red hut compound. People were looking through the sides to see the camera. The line, an 1/2 - 1 hr long, went around 1/2 to 3/4 of the large tent. The only thing saying what it was - was the red logo.

Big bouncers, and tied ropes secured the front - Jim was great - ruthless and humble introducing the footage... Ruthless - if you video tape this we will beat the @#$@# out of you... and humble by shaking everyones hand with a smile. (thank you Jim).

The buzz was incredible, the atmosphere - electric. Peter Jacksons and JIms short film was well shot and powerful (though I would have liked to seen RED gyro stabilized in the chasing helicopter - shooting the bi-planes between trees... some of the shaky footage wasn't RED's fault but the helicopter introduced shakey blur.. Overall is was still incredible!

I talked to many people outside the tent asking questions... I told them to stand in line for the shoot... it was worth it. I also saw the 8k footage and projection by the Japanese. The RED footage looked much better. Better contrast, (their whites in the clouds were blown out.) You could see the noise and the projector showed yellow and green snow - so it wasn't even lined up correctly. So RED looked better in contrast and color compared to 8k.

Also the best part, was there 50 inch screens showing 2k and 4k... At 10 ft or more you could not see any difference. However, at 1 foot, you could see the blur and pixel in the 2k... whereas the 4k looked very sharp except for the camera noise... It shows 4k is overkill on a 50 inch screen at 7 or more feet or normal viewing distance. So until you have a TV with 200+ inches, 2k is fine and so is 4k... I'd say, we are safe until 200+ inches or 8k theater that may come in 10 to 20 years...

It's really baffling how some people just seem to be incapable of comprehending (or of admitting to themselves) that anyone could get excited about a camera like this, and instead resort to these whacky conspiracy theories.

What you describe above is essentially a real world version of the incidents on, uh, certain other web forums, where Red fans have been accused of secretly working for Red. (Not that I'd know anything about such incidents, of course. Heh.)

Mr. Jannard.

I have a very serious complaint! I stood in line for about an hour or so as was the agreement. I even got the "Red Registration Holder" token, which I was told could be used to claim my pay later, and I wore this around the expo for the entire day. However, when I later attempted to arrange for the payment (very discretely, of course) I was told, quite literally, to piss off.

I am sure many others are in the same situation, and I think it is only fair to get an explanation on here. Now that the cat is out of the bag about the arrangement, so to speak, I think we can finally discuss this openly.

Best regards,

Heh, I feel like I work for RED after these first two days at NAB as a paid evangelist. Each day I've stood in that line for PJ's film, I've had a chance to talk shop with some of the guys waiting in line. Earlier today, two guys bailed from line because they didn't want to wait an hour and a half. I told them this was my second day standing in line for this and they asked if it was worth waiting in line twice. I said yeah, it's worth it and it's probably only an hour wait from where I was standing. So, they jumped back in line and seemed pretty impressed after the showing.

I've met some pretty cool people in line and the general vibe is really positive. I even got interviewed today while waiting and they asked if I was excited. Lol... Yes, I'm a reservation holder! Ya know, I don't think RED will need to do any advertising whatsoever. This thing is getting so much positive word of mouth. Having this short film show what the camera is capable of capturing is the proof behind what the RED evangelists are saying, running around NAB with our nifty lanyards and badges.

Again, again and again, Fxx K is not a 4K Camera.

That was the name of a video I made freshman year of high school for history class... It was a really terrible video. Although I looked really good in it; I had a very beautiful face freshman year of high school.

I even shot with slow shutter mode (and in grainy black and white) on a Sony digital 8 to get a "film look." Those were the days...

Yes Brook.. He's kidding... At least he better be.. And as for YOU young man. Such words! Such attitude! SOOOOOOOO unprofessional.

You're getting quite a track record here Mr. Willard (Looks through file). First you almost cost every single user IN THE WORLD to lose access to precious photos of RED camera before it's NAB release date, in what we in the agency now like to call "the Easter screw up" then you misquote various sources on ASA ratings... Hmmmm. A punishment is in order... Yes indeed.

I believe brook was referring to the camera as being holy, as in it's a modular design with lots of holes in.

The shit reference was merely the description used by many for the lack of holiness (or 'modularity') within other cameras at NAB.

I don't think he was being rude, infact it was a very astute judgement, and written very economically :)

That was a clever scheme! Having extras queuing up in front of the RED tent with the wardrobe department inside, let them in and send them out the back door dressed and made up as new `visitors´. Meanwhile some master hypnotists working those few actual NAB attendees who went there, making them believe they saw a 4K digital cinema camera for 17.500 bucks! Next year RED will try to top that stunt with a tiny Pocket RED - yeah, sure.

Jim

I Jim,

no surprise here.

Some time a go I was talking about my change of heart from the Viper/ Filmstream or Sony 900r(would not ever rent Dalsa or Arri), my reason was RED!

Not to say any names but I was told: The RED is just a hipe, nothing more and will soon be realized that it was just that, you (me) are making a mistake to chose this camera for your project, it sound you care so much about it and have so much passion for it, you definately should not follow something it is not goin to deliver.

So now (yerstoday) here I'am walking arround every ones booth with my 3 RED R's on my neck(JIM thanks much for signing them, a plager seeng you again) so now evry one is stopping me and asking about, so here I go about in an explosion of words, giving my Idol PJ and the RED camera there deserved glory.

RED is here and my cameras will be in my hands about this summer.

Still some (...) was sayng: are you sure it was shot on RED and not with one of our rentals?

I said have a great show here at NAB, ho go check out the movie at the RED boot, maybe I can talk to some one there I think I can get you guys in a bit faster if you can not do 1 to 2 hours line.

Any way you and your team at the end are the true winners, no we are, thanks to your products we will make our projects a reality much faster much better, thanks again JIM.

Step 1)
- Ask to >150 Reduser's Members to turn around the booth continuosly...

Step 2)
- Give them some cloths to change at a pre-defined time interval

Step 3)
- let them to see the footage presentation about 42 times a day, before continue their walk around

Just a simplified sketch:

Conspiracy update. I have it on good authority that the paid extras are recently layed off Sony F23 workers.
