and upload so fast in HD 1080p etc....
Are they using some really fast server or something. I just cant believe how fast I can download a movie trailer in HD. And also the file sizes for those things are like 45mb...
I want to know how they do it....

actually, both companies I worked for in the past used Akamai.
and I was the one to negotiate the contract for the last one and it was more like 20k per month for what we had...and that was low end.

I've always wondered this as well... they are impressive for the size.
When I worked at WebMD I wondered that to...then at InTouch I figured it out (or before, anyway) when I bought our systems - as I was Producer for New Media.
Better the input, the better you get out.
Some people/companies think they can put in VHS and get something good...
If Im not mistaken, apple starts with film...and uses no less then digi-beta for compression, but it seemed years back I read that they started with film...dont remember the details...but point is start with the best you can get.
For us we had digi-beta and dvcpro-50, at the time we used 50, and the quality wasnt bad.
We used than anystream system...which is not really that important, its more about workflow, as they use the 'standard' codecs so to speak.
anyway, maybe you guys have found some useful info.
One guy that used to work for me used to take a look at the specs of the movie trailers to see the settings, etc.
Peace

Greetings - fun thread! After hearing about the $20K quote, I'm thinking that we are simply not charging enough for Wiredrive ;) Akamai is getting serious press these days - they are on the cover of this month's Forbes magazine, which provides the most comprehensive writeup I've seen so far about the company history. I didn't know the President was killed in the 9/11 attacks.
Our Wiredrive service is very useful for specific workflows - for example, if you are pitching your business and need to send custom reels, you can find and stitch together a series of video clips and deliver them to the client while talking to them on the phone. Then they can click "Fullscreen" and see the video like watching a DVD. They can also subscribe to the reel, which will automatically open up iTunes and pull down the podcast. AND you can track the number of times the reel has been viewed by the client.

I'd love to stumble upon what Compressor settings they're using. Okay, I'm assuming they're using Compressor. They'd better be, actually!

Hey. Welcome to the forums Bill. I've been thinking more about Wiredrive over the past couple weeks and it seems like such an interesting and useful product. I was wondering if you have any type of demo version of it? Also, the Wiredrive web site is very fluid and easy to navigate. nice work. :)

haha, I've always wondered that too.....I really do HOPE they use compressor for their trailers.
The new version of Compressor looks really awesome. They demo-ed it a bit at the FCS-2 tour and it looked great. Totally new user interface and fucntions.

It's the encoding application in Final Cut Studio.

MPEG Streamclip is a really excellent media convertor for mac and PC. I'm using it instead of compressor here and there.
...Especially good for encoding straight to H264 quicktime from muxed DVD without having to do it in multiple steps (and recompresses). I use it when I can only get a hold of work I've done off DVDs from clients

I seem to remember that during the Apple event at NAB they mentioned that they're now using the new Compressor 3 and such to compress those. That's about all that was said if I remember correctly.
Disclaimer: I could be wrong on this ;)

can i conclude that
wiredrive=a faster way to deliver video to a specific group of people(clients)
akamai = a faster way to deliver video to the masses (youtube like)
p/s- is wiredrive=final cut server?
and akamai= cachefly? http://www.cachefly.com/
-most of internet users do not have latest version of quicktime installed. can i encode an uncompressed* video in macromedia flash (in aspect ratio.HD 1080p) and use service provided by cachefly to deliver videos (faster) for viewing by mass audience? will the quality be as good as viewing apple trailer (.mov in QT7 player) ?
*(say 10 bit HD video at 1920 x 1080 at 235 MB/s)

i remember some people at a place i used to freelance for say that there are some "tricks to the trade" when encoding to get the best results.
i think when you are talking about apple specifically... i bet they use some fancy modified version of compressor that they can change at will considering they produce the software.
when you combine that with great bandwidth and super high quality film and digital cinema, i'm sure it's hard not to get great results.

I've got some pretty fine results with animation frames rendered at 2K rez... But the Apple trailers still look amazing. I'd put my money on a special internal version of Compressor that has a lot more options and settings to tweak than the version they sell to consumers.

I haven't tried it, but I've heard the new version of Compressor comes with presets that are very good now. In the past I think most people agreed compressor wasn't as good as competing software.

I've looked at the new Compressor in FCS2, but haven't actually used it yet. Maybe later this week. There does seem to be a lot of changes.

Yeah. I am really happy with the new Compressor. its a great deal better than the older version. However, its still hard to get the kind of crisp looking compression that Apple gets on their movie trailers. They must use a heck of a lot of sharpening and saturation bumping.
Has anyone had any experience Autodesk's Cleaner? I just got a copy in the mail and was wondering how it stacks up against Compressor.

Just got back from a Final Cut Pro 2 demo... Apple said that all their movie clips on itunes are now all being done by Compressor. This is great news, Apple said that they had hired the best compression people and that the new compressor is a big step up... Glad to here, since I chose bitvice over compressor 2 with my DV footage 2 years ago. Back then, compressor 2 was soft vs bitvice's sharp like DV image. So, I cant wait to try RED with compressor.
