RED Digital Cinema has chosen Las Vegas to build the new RED Ranch Headquarters. Located about ten minutes from MaCarran International Airport and the Las Vegas Strip at the base of the hills in western Las Vegas Summerlin area, RED Ranch facilities will support design, engineering, manufacturing, sales, service and operations... plus a soundstage, restaurant, town center and limited housing on an 80 acre site.

We are committed to growing the RED program founded on delivering innovate shooting solutions based around the most advanced sensor program possible.

Opening is scheduled for 2010.

Seriously though, sounds very interesting. A place for Red to grow . . . .

I've been told I have talent?.. Does it still count if it was my girlfriend? Maybe you need a janitor? Theres a real talent to tossing sawdust in puke... And I think my old baseball days may really help me out there.. :nerd:

"Housing" for "talent" you say... meaning lots of attractive women, to make sure that the reflection highlights don't clip when you hit a greased-up model with a 1.4k HMI. I understand this is very important, I'm glad you're putting significant RnD dollars into this for us.

I guess these are the perks when you, you know, start a revolution.

Will there be gambling? That is, can a patron come in and double-or-nothing a RED product? Will there be a house limit? But most important of all... will you have air-conditioning?

afterthought: Will your new phone number be 1-900-REDHOTMOMMA? (If so, you'll make a fortune off of Opus)

Just waiting to hear Ketch yelling Yeeee-Haaaa all the way here to Mexico when he finds out... :)

News: Japan was just hit with 7.7 earthquake. Strangely the shaking was only felt at the HQ's of certain corporations specializing in camera design and manufacture. Japanese geologists have preliminarily placed the source of the quake into Orange County, USA. Strangely no effects were felt over there...

Noticed that the Ranch is to be located at the base of some hills... might want to dig some drainage ditches around the outside edges of the property... I was in Vegas once when it came a sudden rain of about a half an inch up in the hills, and the whole strip was flooded and left mud knee deep in places. Just sayin'...

ok - in the tradition of a good ol' piss-take.....this was crying out to be done!

Come and listen to a story about a man named Jim
A poor photographer, barely kept his family fed,
Then one day he was shootin at some dudes,
And up through his brain came a bubblin "rouge"

Red that is, cine' gold, resolution-ality.

Well the first thing you know ol Jim's a millionaire,
Kinfolk said "Jim move away from there"
Said "Las Vegas is the place you ought to be"
So they loaded up the truck and moved to Sin City

Nevada, that is. Swimmin pools, movie stars.

Well now its time to say good by to Jim and all his kin.
And they would like to thank you folks fer kindly droppin in.
You're all invited back a gain to this locality
To have a heapin helpin of their RED-hospitality

Minimum 3k that is. Shoot a spell, Take your lense cap off.

Y'all come back now, y'hear?.

Any chance we could talk you into building your fortress of solitude near Salt Lake instead? Better skiing and your close to Sundance, not to mention all the good shooting locations.

But seriously, it will be good to have you guys within a 6 hour drive. In an emergency we could even send a driver down for a replacement part, and have them back for shooting the next day.

Are you moving to vegas just so you can sleep in your own beds during NAB? :shifty:

I also think it would be in RED's interest to open a small service facility in L.A. which would carry a surplus of Cameras and Accessories (as well as technicians) to reinforce the Productions in Hollywood (ala Panavision).

Have you considered this as well?

Also, if you move to Vegas how will this impact your productivity? It can't help but drop just a little with all the distractions around.

Since none of us know where manufacturing is actually happening, my comment might not be totally applicable, but the less humidity a location has, the easier it is to have an electronic manufacturing facility there. As shutter said, we would have loved to have you here in UT, but I can understand Vegas too. Pretty sweet you'll be 3-4 hours closer (by car).

An annual Red Rocks Vegas.

Hah, now the party will switch over to the RED ranch. Who the hell
needs NAB anymore? I also imagine many companies are pulling
up stakes and leaving California.

Businesses leaving California... Duh!
Who's shocked that businesses restricted job growth in one of the most taxed and most regulated states in the union?
These trends will be exacerbated in San Francisco which is even more hostile to industry, and if the country chooses
protectionism against free trade and outsourcing, businesses will leave the country.
From the SF Chronicle: Jobs moving out of state / Cost, complex regulations cited by firms.
Excerpts:

Discouraged by high costs and strict regulations, just under 60 percent of California business leaders interviewed
for a new study said they have policies to restrict job growth in the state or move jobs to other locations in the United States....
The consulting firm [Bain] interviewed chief executives or senior managers of about 50 small, medium and large companies
with extensive operations in the state.

About 40 percent said their companies have an explicit policy to move jobs elsewhere in the United States,
with Texas cited as the most frequent destination. Not counting those companies that must stay in California,
such as retailers or health care providers, the proportion of businesses that said their policy is to move jobs rose to 55 percent.

Another group of executives, just under 20 percent of those interviewed, said their policy is to avoid adding jobs in California,
except when absolutely necessary.

Businesses are clamping down on California job growth because of high costs and a burdensome regulatory environment, Bain concluded.

The cost of doing business in California is about 30 percent higher than in the average Western state, largely because of higher wages and benefits,
according to the study.

Bain also attempted to measure the cost, uncertainty and complexity of California's environmental, labor and other regulations.
It constructed what it called a regulatory hassle index that took into account such factors as compliance costs,
the threat of lawsuits and delays in obtaining permits that hamper operations.

The index showed that "California is far worse than any other state in the union, by a very significant margin,"
said Jeff Melton, a partner in Bain's San Francisco office.

Maybe it was the big wild fires licking the bumpers of Red's cars in the car park. And since Red's in it for the long term, earthquakes to boot.

Of course, the fresh water reservoirs and water table in Vegas is seriously depleted by overextraction and getting worse, so maybe something to take into account too.

Lots of open land around the Red Rock Casino Resort, right next to the Red Rock Country Club, which you can access from Red Rock Ranch Road, Near to the Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area....Just a guess, of course.

Good juju all around, I'd say. Wouldn't surprise me if a certain someone already has a winter home conveniently located nearby.

And for all you folks bitchin' about the heat - well, here in Phoenix, it ain't hot until it hits 115. It's a dry heat, after all. Good for manufacturing electronics. There's many reasons why companies like Intel gravitate toward places like Phoenix and Las Vegas.

Robert Sanders

But, but, but I thought Arnold was supposed to fix all that after he bitch slapped Gray Davis? LOL! Yeah, nothing changes.

CEOs can bitch and moan about the costs of labor in California all they want. But when a single family middle-class home costs $1.2M and is STILL enjoying a housing bubble...yeah, they can keep paying as much as possible.

I really like this idea...

I'll guess right now that the RR facilities will be stellar...

Having owned businesses in both California and Nevada, IMO California is probably the worst state in the nation for conducting business - and Nevada is one of the best states in the nation for basing a business.

McCarran Intl Airport is just a short drive from Summerlin, and there are cut-rate flights from there to just about everywhere.

My company and home were in Summerlin from 2001 to 2004. When not working I spent a lot of time hiking and climbing (with a camera of course!) in nearby Red Rock Canyon. Beautiful place...

Buck, not accusing you of plagiarism or anything... but are you sure you didn't, perhaps unconsciously... get this idea from watching a news story of ILLEGAL broun-skinned alien women with big smiles and wearing shorts being greeted by the Border Patrol as they exited their tunnels that run underneath the border between the U.S. and Mexico?

Is this the beginning of a new media empire?

Should we be writing desert oriented and Vegas ganster scripts?

Maybe. Las Vegas filmmaking can be pretty difficult depending on what you're wanting to do. Don't plan too much for Bellagio, even reps from the Nevada film office say they're very difficult to deal with and that "Ocean's Eleven" was a real pain to pull off. The strip itself is difficult to do because, depending on where you're wanting to film, part of the strip is owned by another county, so you've got to get another approval. Downtown Las Vegas, however, is where it's at apparently. Hence, why most every Las Vegas scene in a movie or TV show is in downtown Las Vegas with the Golden Nugget. Heck, I think the rep even mentioned something about aerials of the city needing to go through a process, which is why they have a bunch of their own stock footage of the city for filmmakers to use without having to go through that. I think "CSI" uses a lot of those stock clips with perhaps some of their own, I'm not sure.

But again, it all depends on what you're wanting to do. Some places may be more accommodating than others. So, if you write a script for Las Vegas, be specific and limited, not vague and grand.

Orrrrrrrh.... maybe instead of a once per year film festival, a year-'round one-stop shop distribution point for shot-on-RED content? Anyone needing content comes to the RED distribution point, tells them what they need in the way of content etc., and previews what's available. Then the digital theatre, movie house, local TV station... whatever... buys a license for the content and RED takes a cut for converting the footage or program into whatever format is needed.

Could also work for stock footage or images. All-in-all, a nice symbiotic relationship between camera manufacturer and camera customer.

Of course, a film festival could still be useful in getting top quality content into wide distribution.

I'd have to buy a few condos if that happened... Set up some time-share opportunities, rentals and whatnot. I'd definitely be down for that.

If RED seriously consider it - I would love to live on a RED RANCH. Considering I will be spending the better part of my time over the next several years in Las Vegas - it would be a no-brainer. Especially if they would approach the unit's pricing in a same way they do their cameras... :)

Being in Vegas, you'll need a formal gate house, for the individuals who look in the phone book thinking that the Red Ranch may be a brothel? (ha-ha)
Other than that... an extremely cool Idea.

Mr. Jannard!

I have some one time used packing cases on my attic! If you need it, i would swap it for one of your little RED riding hoods! A pre-owned would be ok! ;-)

one question: will be the 3D Cam a special model or just the modified combination of two REDs? Makes sense to me...

So about this new RED Ranch.

I have a brother that recently moved into a house in Vegas. I was on the subject of RED Cameras and told him about the RED Ranch that would be built out there. He informed me that his community fought to reject a movie camera company's (I assume RED's) plans for rezoning the land bought to build their facilities. Apparently the locals didn't want RED to deface the landscape...

So, where's RED Ranch going to be now?:waaa:

Riiight! Because if their is one thing Las Vegas is known for is its pristine untouched landscape.

lol, that's what I said. From what I gathered it was going to be built at the top of some cliff, and people there like their precious cliffs.

Zack Birlew

Well, I could understand. My Las Vegas house is located basically on the side of a moutain and the big complaint with my community was that someone was leveling off the mountains to build more houses but the way they look is like some sort of Mayan temple-looking job. Comparing that to the mountains they used to be, it's really lovely to see the mountains instead of the piled up L-shaped Tetris squares many of them have become now.

Also, if a business were to be built on one of those levels, can you imagine the traffic that the neighborhood would have to put up with? No wonder they would fight tooth and nail to prevent that.

However, I don't believe RED would try to build something on a cliff or mountainside for various reasons. Besides, there are dozens of empty areas in and around Vegas that they can build the RED Ranch.

Las Vegas is a good pick. At just about any time during the year you can get incredibly cheap flights and lodging.

Use the subsidized transportation to save costs on shooting. Not much. But not unnoticeable either.

Something may be still in the works, but Jim/RED bought Renmar studios in downtown Hollywood, so that may have become the replacement for a lot of what they were planning in Vegas.

RED Ranch facilities will support design, engineering, manufacturing, sales, service and operations... plus a soundstage, restaurant, town center and limited housing on an 80 acre site.

Sounds like now we know where EPIC will be made. And yes, it is funny said they scaled back the plans for the ranch when they bought RED STUDIOS, LA.

Opening is scheduled for 2010.

Jim

Um, there are only 49 days left in 2010. Is this a typo, or has stealth construction been ongoing and its close to RIBBON CUTTING TIME?

If the latter, then Im going to start mistrusting Jim saying (at least 2 times this past week) "we are terrible at delivery dates. :)

a reason to see las vegas after all these years:)

Jeff Coatney
11-12-2010, 12:17 PM
Another factor to consider is that Commercial Real Estate in Las Vegas has plummeted in value and in order to build you have to factor in the current rental market for the many vendors and tenants that would have moved in. So you're competing against the current market rates which, I suspect, would mean that the Ranch would have to operate at a substantial loss for quite a few years before construction costs could be covered. Jim told us that the Ranch is still in the works, but he confirmed that they are revising the development plan.

The cost of doing business in California is about 30 percent higher than in the average Western state, largely because of higher wages and benefits, according to the study.

I will not hijack this thread.

But really, doesn't this sound like "the US is becoming a 3rd world country because US companies refuse to pay much above subsistence wages to US workers"??
