Redcode Raw should be designated D4. It makes sense for several reasons: First 4k - D4. Second Red is an American camera - the reason there has been no D4 is that to the Japanese 4 is a bad luck number so they skipped from D3 to D5. How appropriate, since RED is definitely bad luck for its Japanese competitors. I'm not into the Sony Panasonic etc. bashing - they have done a lot of great things and they have their business model but it is good - no GREAT - to see an American company bringing about the next big leap in motion picture making. Thanks to Jim and all of the RED team.

Sounds like a great idea - what entity makes the "official" designation, if any, or is it industry nomenclature?

I think it's a TERRIBLE idea to associate the Red camera with a totally different format/manufacturer. (D2 was a shit format that gave a bad taste to many that spent the hundreds of thousands of dollars for the time) D5 has been solid, but with limited support. Branding Red as J4 would give people the wrong idea- ie. associated with Panasonic, lesser quality than D5, expensive as D5, etc.

The fact that the number 4 is bad luck in the Japanese- what's this all about? Who cares. Why would this be great for Red? Sounds like you have your own agenda- sorry.

to the Japanese 4 is a bad luck number

So that's why they don't produce any 4K cameras! :sarcasm:

The D designators D1-D9 etc, are created through a standards group of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) to define technical parameters of recording media like tape and DVD. Saying you think the idea is dumb and why you think so is what this forum is all about - sharing ideas.

This is Mike's sense of humor - dry humor for an underwater guy but still funny.

Sounds like you have your own agenda- sorry.

To imply Aquavideo206 (Mike Hastings) has an "agenda" is both insulting and ignorant. He is an original reservation holder, a senior member of the forum and freely contributes his expertise to the reduser community.

HD Arizona has 6 posts and no camera reservation # or website/contact info? Maybe you work for one of the other guys?:spidy:

BTW - very funny lebowski

It can be pretty difficult to read into someone's sense of humor by simply reading a post. You (Sharkguy) may personally know this individual- great, you understand him, maybe you think his comments were funny. I did not. I took offense to AquaVideo's comments because they have racist undertones. It would be one thing if his reason for wanting a D4 label was purely based upon technical perimaters, but clearly they are not in this case. I hardly view the comparison of 4k - D4 as a deep technical insight.

I would think as a senior member of the forum that one would be more respectful to all the many different viewers/participaters that it represents. Maybe I'm reading far to deep into this post, but a slam is still a slam.

I am a reservation holder, and look forward to all the wonderful things I have seen in the Red booth the last two days. I may not put all the appropriate "handles" or code words into my signatures and profiles but why should that matter in this particular post anyway? This is hardly that type of material. I'll admit I'm new to this forum, but would rather not add to the hypothetical discussions that mostly fill this site. Real product, real facts, real experiences, real answers- that's how we learn and can help each other.
