View Full Version : TC Question

Here's one...
If I'm rolling 48fps, timecode runs faster too, so that each frame has a unique TC number. OK. Makes sense.
But if we roll for a long time, then cut, then roll again quickly, the same TC numbers get used again.
Example:
SHOT 1: TC START= 08:00:00:00
We roll for 3 minutes real time. Then TC END= 08:06:00:00
But the real time on the clock is only 08:03:00:00.
We roll again, one minute later.
SHOT 2: TC START= 08:04:00:00
We roll for 3 minutes real time. Then TC END= 08:10:00:00
But the real time on the clock is only 08:07:00:00.
And much of the clip has the same TC as the previous shot.
I know that edgecode will be different, and the clips have unique names, but does this make editors crazy in any way? It certainly confuses the script super.
Not saying it's bad necessarily; just a factor. A I confused?
Cheers,
Harry

And how do I stop my timecode from rolling even after I have stopped recording? I'm still getting used to the camera.. Thanks.

The timecode rolling between shots is the real time of day (provided you set your clock).

If you plan on shooting multiple high-speed shots back to back you should switch the display to EDGE CODE and note this change in as many places as possible so the various downstream tools are configured correctly in post.

The editors should be able to track both sets of timecode, at least that's the case in Avid. When reconforming later you can use either the edgecode or the TOD code to conform the EDL.

With tape I prefer TOD code, with RED I think that Edge is probably more practical (definitely is when shooting offspeed like that). So if you can't track both timecodes for the shot, then go with Edgecode, it will always be unique per-reel.

The issue with Edge arrives, of course when you get duplicate reel numbers...

hey everybody,
how can i change the time for the edge code on the camera, knowing that every time you format your dig mag it will reset automatically to 01:00:00:00, so why if i want to start the second tape with 02:00:00:00.
