So the Independent has an article on new sensor technology allowing for curved sensors, that could mimic more closely the field of view of the human eye.

Anyone have any thoughts on where this technology may lead in terms of applications beyond just bionics? I.e if there is a use for more human like lenses in drama, and if so how would the recorded images that mimics the human eye be re transmitted to an audience (I would assume throwing an image up on a standard cinema/TV screen would lose the potential effect. Curved screens, direct projection into human eyes, something else?)

I read that article yesterday on the MSNBC web site. Some of the statements about how the technology could improve digital cameras caught my eye (no pun intended!).

They've developed a process for transferring microelectronic components to a curved surface using a mesh-like material to hold them in place.

A curved surface like a sensor perhaps?

What really caught my eye was a statement by the developers saying when we take photos, the middle part of the picture is very clear but when you go to the edge, it is not so clear, and that their curved technology will make the entire picture clear.

Interesting stuff...

Yeah, really fascinating, Would be very interested to see some examples of how the footage doesn't fall off towards the edges, and what sort of lens configuration/field of view they can get from such sensors (wide angle with very different distortion characteristics could certainly be really interesting from a dramatic story point of view.)
