Just wondering what people like better, Red Cine or Red Alert!? And why? DO you find better options with your preference?
Cheers,

What are your output settings? What is your file naming /specification set to? #F#S.mov?

I seldom use REDAlert anymore. Pretty much use REDcine for everything now.

RSW, did you try deleting the whole Redcine folder that lives in your Mac's Library folder?
Path is /Library/Redcine
Give that a shot.

Redalert is better to use on set when DP wants to check Histogram and export frames quickly... RedAlert is just faster for quick looks and creating presets for L & T and Red Rushes, for that purpose its absolutely necessary.
Red Cine I only use at the end of the workflow before Online. Its a very heavy program, and I dont trust On set laptops to run it very well...

what are people's playback speeds in redcine vs. redalert? they both allow adjustments but i find the playback speeds to be the real distinguishing factor.
i always use redcine not just to color correct in realtime but to preview footage at 24fps so i instantly know how the take played out and really looks. aside from outputting looks for export, redalert has never worked effectively for me. it plays at about 1fps, takes forever to repond to any sliders or curves and has no real frame adjustment options like redcine.
i'm running mac pro 8 core 2.8 ghz with 10 gigs

Same result here. Only successful with Red Alert, which is vastly improved with Red Rushes. (6 times as fast with multiprocessing)
Using Mac Pro 8 core OS 10.4.11, Kona 3
Contacted Red about this months ago, and they (Kevin, who is now gone) said they knew about the problem. Is this true of all Mac Systems?

Well... I think you're forgetting that Red Alert only works on Apples, so some of us can't use it and have never even seen it.

We have exactly the same problem here Red South West. We stopped using REDCine now and started using REDAlert, even though we like REDCine more. Hope this will be fixed in the next version.

What is the difference between RedCine and Red Alert?
Did one come first and the other is meant to replace it? The download page really doesn't cover why and when to use one over the other.

Like others have said here. RedCine with Crimson can be a type of finishing tool. Where as REDAlert with REDrushes is more of "I want to see it now"...the way it is on most sets. Its kind of like a lab, except you could watch your dailies during lunch or dinner of that shooting day. If you have a DIT that knows what he's doing on set, which is the only way to go on a Red camera shoot. Usually I never go into REDAlert. But since I started to mess around with REDrushes I'm beginning to like it a little bit more.

RED Alert! was actually an in house only tool in the beginning, but was eventually released since it was ready before REDCINE and also offered certain features that REDCINE didn't, such as quicktime proxy creation. RED Alert! only runs on Intel MAC OSX, and it's code is written to use the CPU(s) for main processing. RED Alert! also has additional apps built around it's engine - REDLine a command line version, and REDrushes, a simplified GUI version meant to be used as a tool to quickly make Dailies or other purposes.
REDCINE was written both by RED and ASSIMILATE (which it is really a lite version of the popular grading software called SCRATCH, as you can see by the UI design). REDCINE is available for both Windows XP/Vista and Intel MAC OSX. It differs from RED Alert! in that it has alot more controls available, which some people like and others find tricky. If you don't know what you are doing, you can create settings that are outside the normal accepted values for the color space you are working in, however this control also allows for greater control if you are an experienced colorist. REDCINE also mainly uses the GPU for processing, so render times are different depending on your system's hardware. Third party tools, such as CRIMSON also have been made to work with REDCINE by use of XML file importing for conforming purposes.
Since each offers different strengths, they both continue to be updated and made available to RED Users.
Both apps are available as downloads when the party agrees to the RED Software License Agreement.
