View Full Version : Anyone got the RIGHT DNxHD QT Mac codec?

trying to batch some clips here, but everything is... eh... noise... :)
Whatever software I use.
Read over in the RA thread that a new DNxHD codec was needed (weird as this is all B15 footy). Really looks like I need it badly, though...
Mac for transcode. PC for playback/edit...

There is a new one in the works currently going through test, but not yet released. Are you using RedCine?

Yes.
About to give up on the AVID thingy for now, but it would be a good thing to have in my arsenal...
I get garbled DNxHD files from all RED software now. What works is going through AJA or DPX to DNxHD with QT, but that feels kinda backwards...

Do you have Compressor? I run the proxies through that to DNxHD 36 for offline ....

yes compressor works great for any Res.

Ended up doing DV files...
DNxHD through the Red tools became garbled. Didn't try compressor. Probably works...
Have to say the AVID workflow has a mile or two to go...
BTW, is there a way to encode better than DNxHD 36?

yes. thru compressor and the latest codec version from MC V.3.0 you have many options including my preferred DNxHD 175 at least for online.

Wait,
how did you manage to do DV files ?
I don't see the option anymore in Redcine nor in RedAlert...
Did I miss something here ?
And is it just me, or isn't Compressor working with 2K files (B16) ?
Thanks,
Nils.

I think the Avid workflow will make significant improvements. Adding DNxHD (even if we don't have the right version of the codec) to REDalert is great.
ALE support in REDrushes.

I used compressor..
You get the right codecs with MC, then I guess

The freely available Quicktime DNxHD codecs are the right ones, but Avid has had to make modifications to support the RED tools. These modified ones haven't graduated from development yet, so aren't available to us regular people yet. Can't be far off though.
In the meantime applications like Compressor that have full Quicktime interface support will work with the existing ones.

What codec are people using out of REDRushes that may be easier for Media Composer to import until the proper DNxHD codec is available?
Still garbage in the encode over here when using the DNxHD codec!

We are in final stage of testing. Should be soon. have ot make sure that it works for all other QT based systems as well.

Hey All,
Is the DNxHD option in Compressor only available to MC editors or is there a plug in for Compressor through FCP? That's one I'd like to try.
Thanks,
Sparky

I use Compressor to transcode Apple ProRes into the current version of the Avid DNxHD QT codec. It works well but I have to adjust the output gamma in order to keep the DNxHD clips from being slightly "washed out".

DnxHd isn't an option in Compressor for me. I tried installing AvidCodecsLE_1.8MAC but still no Dnxhd codec. Is it possible if I am only Mac/FCP?
Thanks,

As I am typing now, I am on a MacBook Pro with 10.5.3 with FCP 6.0.3. I downloaded the Avid codecs, and they appear in compressor.
...granted, there is no droplet or "DNxHD" menu...you have to select a preset in your settings, and in the inspector, select the encoder button, then alter the video settings, then change the QT codec to DNxHD. Once that is done, a drop down will appear at the bottom of the window to change what flavor of DNxHD.
Hope this helps!
