I decided to start this thread to gather the user thoughts on this....until REDcrew comes up with some news.
I hope it turns out to be useful.

Wondering if the RED folks have been talking to these people

Laser based projection from pocket size to commercial theater.

100 dpi. 4k. LCD. <$2,000. Please.

I'll take a 4.5K display @ 165 dpi, thank you. <$3K would be wonderful, but I know that's a lot to ask. But at 4.5K (think 4608x2880 for 16:10) 165dpi makes for a 33" display. 32" if the vertical is shortened to make the aspect 16:9. I'd also go for 200dpi as that would be optimal to start thinking resolution independence and getting to the point where pixels would start vanishing from view.

With monitors already close to the eyes, I think we need a preview on a larger and more distant one. That would be the best solution for our eyes (focusing from near to far).

-40 inch screen for editing. - 3 feet away

-60 inch screen for preview. - 10 feet away

The future of studio. Yummy.
Multiple sources PIP capability. OLED technology.

And something like...

(this is from Siemens)

I'm not actually interested in a 4K display as much as I am in a 4K projector. Final Cut Studio 2 will let us edit native Redcode RAW downscaled on the fly to 1K resolution. That's fine for editing on a regular monitor.

The projector will come in when it's all been edited, and you're doing final color grading and sound mixing. That's when we're going to want to see the finished product in all its glory.

Hopefully, the projector will be able to display native 4K Redcode Raw with a LUT applied for screening dailies, with the RED-DRIVE plugged in via Firewire 800 or e-SATA. None of that "4 dual-link HD-SDI cables hooked up to a big-ass RAID" crap. Simple, easy, 4K Redcode Raw projected on a 100" screen, accurate enough for critical color work. Is that too much to ask for? :whistling:

What's your experience with lut building and calibrating projectors?

None whatsoever. :bye2:

One can dream, though.

I think it's interesting that for some people the possibility of owning a small cinema screen and Red 4k projector, with the projection room converted into an editing suite so that you can immediately preview the footage isn't such an impossible idea for relatively decent budgets in the near future.

Imagine actually having it up on the big screen to check the color correction hehe... that'd be sweet, something that only in the digital age can you truly do.

Paul, you hit that one head on. Ahhh. The revolution continues on into the hinterland . . .
