You know, I have to laugh. Jim throws off one casual sentence to announce this product, without actually telling us anything about what it is, and people are already taking out their wallets to buy it sight unseen.

All we really know is that it's smaller than RED ONE! It might actually be more expensive, with the miniaturization of technology that's required, just as laptops are more expensive than desktops. It might have a 2k sensor or a 4k. It might have a fixed zoom lens or interchangable lenses.

I have every confidence that whatever it is, it will be a high quality product. My personal opinion is that it will have a 4K sensor, because RED has spent so much effort promoting the world of 4K. If I were Jim, I would put a non-interchangeable high-quality auto-focus capable zoom on it, so it would be like the GL1/2 as opposed to Red's XL1/2. That would make it non-competitive with the RED but open up RED quality to news gathering and other applications requiring more automation and less precision. That way, people who bought the RED today would still be happy they had it, which is something Jim promised us.

But this being said, I can't resist speculation just as you guys can't, but it amuses me to see you rushing up, cash on hand, to buy a product nobody but Jim has any details on yet!

Blind me, I am thinking the wrong idea then, I thought the mini-RED could be much lower spec and lower price then REDONE, so instead of struggle my little pocket to fit in a big REDONE, I might be able to own two or three mini-REDs.

Is it still a big big laughing dream for a prosumer to dream of a camcoder that can attach various 35mm photo lens (nikon & canon) in 1080p 50fps quality ?

So all indie get the revolution from RED but the rest of mass prosumer market still stuck like before...

50 years ago photographer played with SLR, in the digital era today, almost everyone can play with DSLR, it is only the real skill & true "frame-size" make the different among consumer, pro & the best.

20 years ago videographer played with compression, but 20 years later, we still struggle with compression. If REDONE has already make the first step, why don't make the second step on mini-RED for the rest of people ?

If the position of mini-RED is just a little toy for professional DP, charge in premiere price to secure the sales of REDONE, ohh.. please don't bother to inform me, I have no money.

I really hope that mini-RED is something smaller and much-lower-spec then REDONE, targetting different prosumer market where 4K 120fps isn't really benefit much (at least now :O) but 35mm len mount & 50fps will certainly be a winning move even in 720p.

In short, I hope mini-RED is after the market of what pany HVX, cany H1 & sony Z1 are fighting on.

"In short, I hope mini-RED is after the market of what pany HVX, cany H1 & sony Z1 are fighting on."

I believe it was referred to as a `Pocket Camera´. It could be a box for the Mysterium 4K sensor, flash ram, small battery. PL mount, no finder/LCD but connectors, stripped down feature set = 4K RedCode straight. It could be a `HVX replacement´, but at which pricepoint without hurting Red One sales? It has been speculated that it could be 2 K. It has also been said, that it could have a fixed zoom lens, but this would only push the price up even for a 2K camera. If a smaller LCD (OLED?) can be produced (720p or even downconverted SD), which works in bright sunlight, there might be a way to make a Pocket RED with PL/Ni/Ca mounts for under 7.500. I sure need at least one stealth-cam for doc work and I am stuck with Sony at the moment, `enjoying´ HDV. Yes - and the HVX200 is too big anyway.

Is it possible to have mini-RED as modular as REDONE ? built-in flash ram & battery would simply add weight and size to the camera. Why don't make longer connection cable so that I can wrap the RED-drive/ram/battery on my body.

Please no more fixed-len, I don't need a zoom in zoom out button. I like to shoot with any photo len I like, manually handle len control.

no LCD ? it's even better so I pick the one I like :p. And I am sure RED will make all REDONE accessories compatible to mini-RED.

I love REDCODE, no HDV please...

Well, RED-Tank. You are essentially asking for a RED ONE.

BTW, how about that for a MiniRED:

hmm.. okay then, let put everything back to the camcorder body if only REDONE can be modular... but please no fixed len...

anyway we are all speculating at the moment :).

Yes I've learnt a lot about Brevis, SGPro, Letus & some other 35mm adapters. They are all great products, each one has a very nice owner behind too, passion, work hard, friendly and open mind, love to talk to them.

Not just the 35mm adapter, the Canon HV20 camera is a 1000$ machine that with a 250$ card can offer 1920*1080 24p 422 uncompressed output

hmm.. clearly it is not the "resolution" makes the different. RED shall know about this.

let's wait for the announcement :).

I would like an email notice of the reservations too. If this is affordable, and has better specs that the HVX (and shoots redcode raw), you'll sell thousands...

I can't wait for more info

Shows the faith people have in their company. Unlike the Majors who decided to filter out junk product to us over the years in hopes that we'll buy a new camera from them every few years. Anyone one of them could've done this years ago, but no, leave it to a company that makes sunglasses to revolutionize the video industry. I laugh for hours thinking about this.

Way to go RED!

I think that a Nikon or Cannon mount would make a lot more sense, although I would expect that if the lens was interchangeable, it would be PL mount by default, so you can use RED lenses.

I would love a Nikon mount, but if it came with a nice fast zoom, I'd still be happy.
