Anyone run into a problem where the top handle's base breaks off from the top mount at the narrowest point around the screw holes?

After looking at the small amount of material actually holding the handle on - I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen?

Here you go-
It happened while in the care of our lovely airlines. Camera was SECURELY packed in a Pelican 1620 - surrounded by foam.

Oh, thats not a problem with the Red handle, TSA just needed to see if it was a bomb so they took it out of the case and broke it...it didnt blow up so they put it back into your pelican case. Did you get the "Your luggage was randomly searched for safety, we had to break some stuff" Memo in the case?

It happened to me with the right or the left handle. The assistant was tightening it for a handle shot and the edge broke.

Did get the memo - minus the bomb testing part.

I guess we can't say that is from stress of loads.

Shoud I worry about this, I carry my RED from that handle?

Fully laden with a large zoom, a Red can easily hit the scales at around 50 lbs.

While we've had no problems with the handles, I really don't trust them for extended carry or abrupt moves. I always carry the Red with two hands; one on the handle, the other cradling the camera.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

Does anyone know if the center portion is available as a part?
Basically the vertical piece that the bolts sit in...not the rubber horizontal part.
Mine appears to have cracked.
Probably was tightened too much on set.

Think everyone should check the condition of their handles - along the thin sides, surrounding the bolt holes. the metal in that area is incredibly thin.

ALWAYS cradle the camera when holding by the handle. That's just good AC habits. Besides the handle breaking (Arri SR 1 top handles and right hand grips were famous for this) your hand could be sweaty or greasy, or you might have a muscle spasm or just lose your grip.
I do think the thickness of the material in the top handle, as well as the top mounts they screw into, are a cause for concern. Over time I think we'll see a change in design, or third party vendors like ET producing better solutions.
Let's be careful out there!
Cheers,
Harry

Mine has also cracked in the same place but has not broken off... I'm thinking about getting the ET cheese stick handle instead.

I think that handle should be able to support the camera with no issues.
Maybe the thingy around the screw its been designed too thin?
Dunno.. So bad they opened your case and damaged the thing. I would complain to the airline and the TSA.

The first thing me and my AC said was "Fuck, I don't trust that handle one bit." Have been busy in the shop fabricating The "Man Handle". I'd hang off a roof from it.

yes. i always use it.
4 screws instead of 2 makes it feel better to carry.

but i support it always with the other hand on the bottom of the camera when i transport it.

My handle had a crack where the screw holes are. Luckily i found it it time and I sent it back to RED for replacement. Since then I always remove the top handle when storing the camera. Admittedly, I really do not trust the RED Top handle and now I am convinced I will be going with a Zacuto handle solution.

my right side handle broke too only because the AC was tightening it for handle shot. Red said it was not under warranty and I had to buy a new one. Now I see that this handles break is sort of epidemic.
