View Full Version : Birger Lens Mount frustration venting

In an attempt to declutter the popular Birger thread, please use this thread for any emotional comments about this lens mount.
Collectively, I wonder just how much time has been spent reading and theorizing about the Birger mount.
What is your favourite definition of "soon", "next week" and "slight delay"? Who can post images of FedEx packages? Is your camera bricked until Birger arrives? Your favourite BirgerMoment?
Btw, as said in the title, this thread is for venting, so please don't start bashing fellow posters with "but the Birger mount will be amazing". If it wasn't we wouldn't get so emotional about it.

For you and probably all the rest of us. A few months ago at NAB I tested the Canon Birger mount and figured by the time my camera was ready, the Birger would be delivered and field proven already. But now here we are in August, my camera is almost here and still no mounts in users hands? It seemed to work perfectly at NAB but I guess it's just too complex to get finished and ramp up production so quickly.
I am just glad I didn't sell all my Nikon lenses.

Steve, did you order the Nikon mount with your camera? If you don't order it with the camera and wait maybe for a week or two, and then order it again from Red, do you know if Red would ship it fast or I'd have to wait for a month?.
To be honest, I am in the 108 batch, and I have absolutely 0% hope that I'd get even a dumb mount before October 1st.

Did not finalize my order yet, but I assumed the Nikon mounts were readily available... I guess we need to ask our RED rep to be sure.

Assuming that the have the mounts in-stock at RED.... I have found that most orders seem to take about 2 weeks from online order/payment to arrival. (NC via FedEx ground that is 4-5 days shipping).

I think the resale on the nikon mount would be quite good, if you didn't want to keep a mount for a backup that is... In the bigger picture $500 is not that much.

I know supernova. You are right, and probably it would make me feel more relaxed if I just got the Nikon. The problem is that I am hitting the road Oct. 1st for a month and I have pretty good canon glass. If I bought the Nikon, I would have to get two Nikon lenses from a friend and they are not even close to my Canon ones.
The stressing point is that I don't mind buying the Nikon mount if I knew that the Birger is going to take 3 more months to get in my hands, but the stressful thing is that it is supposed to be shipping the past Saturday... I mean the Next Wednesday, I mean... who knows when. And I am supposed to be getting my First RED email anytime soon.....
This uncertainty is killing me. Not to mention that I may not have my EVF or LCD Pro or 16Gb cards, Red RAID... in time, but that's another thing to worry about.

When will the Birger mount be delivered (working version, shipping in quantitiy, to RED owners):
Monday (i.e. yesterday)
"Monday" (Birger definition)
This month
Next month
This year
Next year
"Who knows" (i.e. "Monday")
NeverAnd, on a similar note, will the IMS warranty issue be resolved in the near future?
Yes
No

You may be right, but perhaps for the wrong reasons. I believe Erik is getting married in October. So I can only imagine what would that do to the shipping schedule if he doesn't manage to ship before then.
Hope he ships before he gets hitched!

Erik has gone dark again.
I wish there was some choice.
Anything to hope for mount-wise for the 13th?

Again, we're left guessing as to what is happening (or isn't). :glare:
I'm speechless. After all, what can be said that hasn't already been said... 4000+ times already?
Nothing personal Erik, but I really wish RED would offer a smart mount as an option. :help:

Martin, Canon EF and EF-S lenses do not have a manual iris control pin, like Nikon lenses do. Nikon has always worked to make all their cameras and lenses compatible with each other in one way or another. That's why you can still use a vintage 1970s Nikkor on a Nikon D3, for example. With Canon, no such luck.
I feel your pain...

Yeah, but I think what he suggested was a temp solution, while he wait for the birger mount. You can still use a EOS body to change the iris. Not very practical, but usable.

Well, then, if that's what Martin wants, Alesniak sells a dumb Canon mount, which works like you describe.
Funny thing is... Martin has been pretty much on top of all things related to lens mounts for RED. He should've known this already.

Yeah, I could be interested in that as well.. depending on the price of course. And if things go the way they usually go for me, I could very well order this mount, receive it and then, have my Birger mount show up the next day... oh well...

I only need the Canon mount to use my lovely Contax Zeiss primes - presently I have no need for the electronics. Thus I'd be perfectly happy with a simple, non-electronic mount. For other users this would at least provide a temporary solution, until Erik/Andy fix whatever issues they have but aren't communicating to us.
Over the past months I've written a couple of PMs to both Andy and Erik asking for a dumb mount, but they don't even bother replying. Actually, Erik - the only one at present with a RED certified mount - said that he had no plans on offering such a mount. I suggested that he might rethink this stand in view of the eternal delays. No reply.
It doesn't seem as if a customer's trouble are anything either one are concerned with, they just want to get an absolutely perfect mount out there with all bells and whistles, without providing an interim solutionfor those who trusted their promises. Maybe I am just spoiled by REDs dedication to actually helping us out in the field.

I am considering canceling my order if it doesn't arrive this week. This is taking too long and the money would be better spent adding a Red canon mount to the Scarlet or Epic camera I will be buying next year.

I know how it feels to be anxious. I have 3 red cams, but only 1 Birger mount. I can relate. I don't even own a PL mount lens, nor will I buy one. I prefer the Canon glass with the control that the Birger software offers. But, I have 2 door stops sitting here that cost $17k each. I can relate, but after owned one, I am an addict and wont settle for less.

So, if it exists and it works, wth isn't Birger sending more of these babies out?

I got my FEDEX notice too - but I have to admit it feels like a bit of a panic email because RED was announcing something big. I know that is speculation speculation. Clearly this is not an easy task. The lack of information and misinformation is what is so frustrating. If this does come through I will be thrilled.
I'm still trying to figure my lens situation. I have a Red 18-50 and can rent what I need but hate that I can't be more spontaneous - the answer is to buy more PL or Nikon but I love my Canon lenses.
Info from Birger would be terrific. I don't think it's out of line to ask for an update after having paid for my mounts ( yes 2 ) almost a year ago.

That's kind of funny... to get a FedEx notice but FedEx doesn't even have it?
Can I do that with my IRS tax return? I'm always one of those tax payers who wait in the long line at midnight on April 15th. :)

All I really want is to be shooting 4k images with my Contax lenses. Instead I spend insane amounts of time on the various mount threads and the remaining time with some second-class Nikon lenses.
I´m really not into politics, I just want a freakin´ mount.

AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I'm with you Martin. I have just reached a very frustrated point...again. I have been patient with the Birger for a long time. I bought a RED 18-50 while I was waiting. I have so much great canon glass that I am dying to use. A dumb mount just is not a workable solution when you can't easily control aperture. I don't want to spend a fortune on PL glass when the Epic's are around the corner. I don't want to buy a bunch of nikon glass just to have lenses in the meantime. I could have done this but was following the carrot of "we are almost shipping" from Birger for the last 9 months. Now the warranty issue that I thought was resolved raises it's ugly head one more time. WTF!!! I have to say my spirits are down. Now I'm trying to decide if I buy the 50-150 or take all that cash and buy old Nikon lenses where I can control the aperture manually and at least have that. Boo. I really wish this was a better situation with better choices. The glass issue is so much more of a sticking point than I thought it would be when I jumped into this pool.
Rant - ok - Thanks.

Posting here to try to get a call from Erik or Amy at Birger. Have tried calling but the voicemail box is full and won't take messages, nobody is answering the phone over the last two days. Nobody is answering PM's or numerous emails.
People need to know what's going on and when they'll receive their mounts. There has been no answer or reply from Erik in 12 days regarding anything.
I spoke with Erik on 29th and he told me that I'd have my mount in two weeks and to just hold on, I did.
I have tried and tried my best to remain nice and patient but I'm tired now of watching the thread and hoping for something/anything regarding shipment. I paid in full for my mount, got a FEDEX tracking number for shipment but then the mount was never sent out. I'm not the only one.
If anyone at Birger is reading this or reading the Birger Thread please contact me before tomorrow at 305-766-3238. This is my last try at communication privately.
Best to all,
Frazier Nivens, Ocean Imaging

Was good speaking to Erik, but there has been silence ever since.
Been now three weeks since my cancellation and I have not received a refund. Have mailed both Erik and Amy repeatedly and not gotten a single reply. Sent a PM to Erik. No reply. Sent off a final attempt at resolving this issue yesterday. You guess right: No reply.
Imagine if I could charge for the time spent on the Birger issue...
