Le Cercle Rouge

I just saw Le Cercle Rouge at Film Forum yesterday. I noticed that a couple of the exterior shots are really grainy. Like in the scene where the police are chasing the escapee through the French countryside. The close-ups and medium shots are very clear but the wide shots look like they were shot Super8mm. There are a couple other instances of this in the film but the chase scene was the most standout to me. Does anyone know why this is? I'm wondering if it's the same way on the DVD release.

I've only seen the DVD, so I can't say how it compares to the print you saw. But, IMO, the DVD looks really good. There are some scenes that have more grain than others, but nothing that pulled me out of the story.
