Hey Guys,

Hope Jim and co. don't mind me passing this along. If you do please remove this. Anyways, I was on AppleInsider and they had some pics from the Apple NAB booth. Well, it also looks like they've got some stills of monitors showing the Peter Jackson film! You can see World War 1 era planes so looks like the stuff!

Nothing major I guess but something to tide us over until the film is up!

Yeah, notice how they call it "grading" not "color correcting"?

I think that shot was just a coincidence. I don't think it was from Peter Jackson's film. I'm fairly certain until this music/universal thing is resolved nobody will have access to the footage.

I think the music thing is solved.

Yup. Actually they had a few of those plane shots in the FCS2 demo but they are from PJs film.

Yes that's something I was wondering about. RED does have a still on their website (though maybe it's not from the film) so it seems like they have the rights to the stills. Also, that was at NAB that they were showing it, not online so it seems likely those are stills. I mean what else would it be considering they are planes. Not to mention the fact they have RED written right above the displays. Anyways, you can't see much from the pics regardless it just caught my attention.

Yeah - post some footage already! Some of us aren't getting any work done because we're hitting F5 all day long! :-D

Are you talking about Color?

Color is a color grading application, not a color correcting app. Color grading implies more extensive and carefully crafted color work, whereas color correcting is basically just making sure all of the shots are consistent.

If you shot on two different days and one of the angles is bluer than another, then when you fix that, you're color correcting.

If you want to make the roses in the background of a shot more vibrant or make it feel like sunset, that's color grading.

Color grading applications can, of course, be used to color correct as well, but they can do much more than that.

I'll second that one. I should be studying for my art history exam and yet I'm on here hoping the film is released ahahaha.

I could be wrong here, but from what I saw, the thing they don't have the rights to is the music, which is from King Kong. The footage is RED's and Jackson's. And on those Macs they were showing the footage as converted to the new 4:2:2 Apple Codec, like they were showing the RAW footage playing in the RED booth.

I'm really confident that Jim will make asap a great gift to all of us here...

Just waiting..

Strangely enough if you go to the online store on the main RED page, there is a thin banner on top of the frame that shows part of a still from the PJ footage. It also says "Watch demos shot with RED ONE tm" Does anyone else think that the banner is just waiting to get linked to some footage or screen shots in the near future :) ?

Well it seems like they were originally going to do just that once everybody had seen the footage at NAB then Universal interjected and said no then they said yes so I guess we're just waiting now.

"Grading" is the industry standard term.

Not a coincidence. :-) They have a machine with an active timeline and sample RED footage from Peter Jackson's film (converted into ProRes 422) for realtime playback on the machine on demo. It's pretty cool stuff.

The film will be up soon enough... most of the guys aren't even back yet. I'm in the airport now. Most of the team is still wrapping the booth and relaxing a little.

Fear not - you'll have the footage soon enough.

But yes, those are stills from the film [or at least the outtakes]. The music was the limitation.
