Excellent!

Please let me know if there are any specifics you would like covered so I can make sure we please everyone!

It is going to cover a lot in two days (including a bit of time with a Scratch system). We are trying to touch on post workflow, without spending too much time - this is an assistant's course after all!

I will be one of the instructors.

I would appreciate the community's input on what you think we should cover. What does a working, experienced camera assistant need to know to add the Red One to the list of cameras they are comfortable working with?

What does a working, experienced camera assistant need to know to add the Red One to the list of cameras they are comfortable working with?

How to check/clean the sensor. (checking the gate)
Wingnut operations.
How to use the focus assists.
How to use false color.
Know the menus and how to change settings. What the settings do. How to assign the user buttons.
How to adjust back focus.
How to interrupt the stop lights/histogram.
How and why to unmount media. Always format on camera.
Know the current ops guide.
Media capacity at the various resolutions.
3:1 transfer times.
Basic troubleshooting of known bugs/issues.

Hey Shawn

All of this is on the list! :-)

Is there a single thread here where all of the known issues are posted (i.e. black spot sun, image skew, etc)?

I was also planning on presenting a bit of a Red timeline - when the beta cameras were released, the free switch to the X bodies, all of the free hardware upgrades, the new features added with each build, how the community has requested and received new features, etc.

I think it's important for the students to know that they are not dealing with a regular camera company here in terms of customer service and 'obsolescence prevention'.

By understanding the beta process, I think they can provide better responses when confronted with things like "Hey, isn't the camera that can't shoot in the cold?" or "I heard it can't shoot certain trees".

Does anyone know of a Red One timeline already posted, or would you folks care to contribute to one?

Hi Dylan,

Do you know if this is available for non-union camera assistants?

I'd be interested in participating...I'm a Red owner who works as a 2nd AC/HD technician with mostly P2 (previously) and RED footage.

Two major issues for me have been maintaining a consistent look throughout the production chain (properly exposed footage on location looks dark on the DIT Macbook Pro) but fine on the on-board and HDSDI out to BTLH1700W.

And secondly getting the DPs light meter to properly match the RED, especially under tungsten (due to budget constraints often gets chosen over HMI/daylight). This may lead to an 80B or 80C discussion...

Hopefully we can chat further.
Regards,

Brian

The online application form says discounts are given to CSC and IATSE members, but the course is definitely open to anyone who qualifies.

You have to scroll down to the bottom of the page linked in the first post above to find the actual application form.

Thank you for doing this!!
What build would you be working with, and because of a gig I have at that time, the date of the course conflicts with work. Would this course be offered again? I'd love to attend!

I figured - As to the other things, I think a huge search, copy/paste session is in order.

Same with:

I'll see what I can do -

I wish I could attend, but I live elsewhere. Sounds great.

Here is another one of Brook's great contributions.

"Evolution of Red"

This would be a great resource for a condensed timeline with a nod to the source of course.

Hi Brian

Yes. This available for non-union assistants. We are asking for a resume in the application process because we want to be sure we get working assistants and not owner/operators looking to learn how to use their cameras.

We will be touching only briefly on the post chain - only as much as a first assistant needs to know! So I am not sure if we will get too much in to what you are talking about (maintaining consistency throughout the workflow, etc). This starts to fall more in to the DIT category - depending on the size of your shoot.

But as I said, there will be a DP on hand to discuss things like this.

Thanks

Hi digitaliris

We will be using the current release build (some for of 16?).

Sorry to hear you can't make it.

We are discussing doing a more comprehensive Digital workshop in the spring. This would cover RED, Dalsa, Genesis, D21, etc.

Depending on the response, we might do another RED course?

We are looking for people who have some experience in the field as an assistant.

Fill out the application and send it on in!

Right now we are prepared for 15 students. We will add 5 more if there is sufficient demand.

Look forward to seeing you there.

I hope this workshop will be offered again after the new year. As someone asked before, will there be an online version of the workshop?

This is an intensive hands on workshop that would be impossible to duplicate online.

There is a "free" one day crash course being offered by a Toronto production house this week if that suits you better? Very condensed version of what we are doing.

There is still space for the CSC course available.

Hey Gang

I am sorry to say that we have had to postpone the workshop due to instructor availability (or lack thereof!).

We will reschedule for a "less busy" time of year.

I'll keep you posted.

Apologies to all the applicants!

Busy is good. Right?
