Hi I've read on CML that the 18-50mm zoom breaths and was wondering if anyone noticed this?

I think the lenses at NAB are hand made so wonder if the breathing problem will be addressed in the production model?

Regards
Rory

Hi Rory

I presume you saw Evins response to Stu on CML. There was some discussion of the issue here.

I saw it personally at NAB.

I saw it, handled it, and photographed it at length at RED headquarters two weeks before NAB, for my RED at NAB, Part 1 article on Studio Daily. I also viewed the results in the RED tent at NAB. The lenses at NAB were not the shipping versions. When available, a shipping RED 15-50mm zoom will be tested out on my RED #8 and the results posted. The workmanship of even the demos lenses seemed excellent. With RED's attention to detail, I expect the 18-50 to be an excellent lens. I can't imagine it breathing excessively. I'll be the first to know, as my #8 will be the first non-RED Team testing of a RED One camera. Let's reserve judgment on the lens until the test results are in. Even then, each individual lens can have its own nuances. We'll try and get two 18-50 zooms to test to define if their operating parameters are the same.

Yes, I second Gibby's remarks; I was just reporting what I saw. Let's wait for the lenses to be released and tested properly. In any case, eliminating close focus breathing at the long end of the lens is good challenge.

Pushed till end of the year.

That's when the 18-85 was expected anyway, wasn't it? Seeing the 18-50 at NAB blew me away, especially when I was told it would be available when my camera is (August), and seeing its small size. Made me rethink my lens strategy. The full RED prime set is also making me update my plans. I still want the 18-85, but the 18-50 will be better for handheld, steadicam . . . . .
