Red has been tested on the Steadicam Archer, and by all accounts performed well. I brought up the Glidecam in an earlier thread and a couple of others were interested too but we got no replies so I thought it might be worth it's own thread.

I'm not sure what the cheapest price for the archer is, the tiffen/steadicam website lists it at $29,995, but I'm sure it could be had for less than that. It also lists the camera sled capacity as 10 - 23lbs.

By contrast the glidecam V20 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=316667&is=REG&addedTroughType=search) can be bought for $3700 w.o monitor or $4200 with monitor. It has a camera sled capacity of 15 - 26lbs. So it looks on paper at least to be good comparison to the Archer.

Now I'm not stupid, I'm sure that you will be sacrificing something for the jumps in price. What I'm wondering about is whether anyone has ever compared or read a comparitive review of the two and could comment on them. I'm looking at the glidecam as something suitable to start out with.

As a side note, the monitor (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=316667&is=REG&addedTroughType=search) that can ship with the glidecam has a very odd resolution to me, 1440(h) x 234(v)... what's that about? Has anyone used it before? would it work well with RedOne? It's 16x9 but if that resolution is enough it seems you would be losing a fair bit of details, maybe I'm not reading it correctly.

That's a common monitor resolution for SD work, but no way you'd want it for the RED. Marshall makes some very good HD monitors that would probably be okay.

Unfortunately I can't compare the Steadicam & Glidecam.

Two things: LCD: 1440(h) x 234(v) that's a common pixel count for low rez LCDs; and a way to make it sound good, as they are counting each color separately. It's really:480x234
Secondly; Glidecam; the V16 and V20 are really ancient in their design, and probably not worth looking at anymore. I'm sure Glidecam is actually not making them anymore, and just getting rid of old stock. Glidecam has the MUCH MUCH nicer V25 now; at $9400.00 it's more expensive, but it's just night & day in its design and build-quality.

I'm not so sure that that resolution won't be sufficient for an on-sled LCD with a RED One cam.
Having a high rez-monitor on-sled might simply not be necessary. It's unlikely that you'll be using it for focusing anyway. It's just for framing, and as such, SD should suffice.

Having said that though, I think Glidecam should be looking at upgrading that LCD soon; they've been selling that monitor for YEARS now. One thing, it IS nice and bright.

I am certainly not a expert in the camera stabilizer field but most of the price increase in a steadicam is in materials, the springs in the arms on a steadicam are titanium very expensive a lot of the sled is built out of billet aluminium. with carbon fiber shafts on most of the sleds. I have heard of operators having the same riggs (that are used on a regular basis) for upwards of 20 years.

What it comes down to is how often are you going to be using this "Steadicam". Is it just once in a while for your own stuff or are you going to be making a living with it?

Could the LCD that RED sells be adapted to be used with these sleds?

Is anyone going to make a RED sled that routes power, lcd, and esata connections from the bottom of the sled to the top?

We at ActionProducts are soon going to release a modified version of our stabilizer system "ActionCam". It is then possible to use the red LCD and power bricks with our "ActionCam - RED". The price we are aiming at is below 15k and the system will have a back mounted vest and be up-gradeable to our big system the "zero-g".

Hello Brian,

Love the design and look of your product. I've poked around and haven't been able to find any reviews of it. Can you steer me towards any?
