new to RED. have a few noob questions...

the office i work with has two RED bodies , 1 with a Nikon F mount. to use with film lenses. ( this is the setup im using)

im shooting in 4k 2:1, doing a few test shots.

heres a few questions.
1. when or why should i use RED alert, over Cine..
2. i cant playback the 4k file in real time..why? ( i have a macbook pro with 2g of ram )
3. it takes FOREVER to render out a QT file .why? ( is this normal ).
4. does it make a difference if i read from or write too a different drive.. ( i currently am reading from my internal drive. writing to an external FW800

6. both cine and alert. crash in the middle of an export. i have yet to successfully export one full clip

am i doing something wrong?

1. For reviewing shots on set most people use and prefer RedAlert. Plus render QT files out in RedAlert, not RedCine.

RendCine is best used as a kind of Telecine for Red footage. You can do batch clips. You can do a first light. Many people have been using it in conjuction with crimson to online their offline edit and render out to DPX or Tiff.

2. 4K's a lot for even an 8 Core. A Macbook cannot handle it.

3. What are you rendering it out with? Everything will take some time, but a render to QT should be the fastest, if you're using Red Alert or Log and transfer in FCP.

4. Yes, maybe someone else can chime in on the best setup (I know there are those who like to daisy chain their drives and CF card readers). Generally though, keep your media off your main hard drive, it's doing enough work handling the OS and programs.

5. Uh, skip a question? :)

6. This clearly sounds like a bug. Try Log and Transfer. We'll need the specs on your computer, what version OS and QT you're running, and the Log files from Cine. Then people can begin to diagnose it.

to be in real time with your footage , for editing nobody is using 4K, or 2K files.

just now i was trying to output a 15 second shot to 1080 QT with h264 at medium quality.. and it quoted me 2 hours.

then. when i played back the partial QT the frame rate looked jittery... i am shooting at 23.98

Those are normal speeds for conversions to h.264 on a laptop. Plus if your converting the clip from a FW800 / 400 , USB or Internal lappie drive... all are going to be really slow...

Yes your laptop has trouble playing clips back, so does everyone else's...

I can play _M proxies full speed ONLY from a e-sata drive using this express card adapter...
