I emailed Brian @ Redrock to find out whether they had been able to test their Matte Box or Remote FF with the Red 18-50mm Zoom at NAB last night, but unfortunatly they had been too bust to get to the RED tent.
I asked him a few questions which he was very gracious to answer within a few minutes of receiving my email so I thought I'd share them with you all:
Paul: I realise your first customer base are your 32mm adapter users mostly using SLR lenses and your own lens gear assemblies. Have you tested the MicroRemote on any cine lenses similar to the Red 18-50mm Zoom and if so how capable was it and if not do you foresee any issues with it at all?
BRIAN: We have tested it on zeiss cine lenses and it works fine. It has film pitch gearing. The drive motor gears are interchangeable, so it can support other gearing (fujinon and canon). Those will come in a later release
Paul: Is it possible to swap the 4"x4" rotating filter stage for a third 4"x5.65" filter stage when purchasing if desired?
BRIAN: The base configuration will come with the three stages mentioned. You can purchase an additional fourth stage and change the configuration of the microMattebox to be just those three 4x565” filters.
Paul: Do you plan on or would you consider making a rotating 5.65"x5.65" or 6" x 6" rotating filter stage in the future?
BRIAN: No current plans, but if there’s enough interest we would consider it.
Paul: How much does your MatteBox with 3 stages weigh? If you have individual weights this would also be a bonus
BRIAN: Can’t answer that right now since final materials are still in a bit of flux. It would be comparable to a chrosziel or arri mattebox.
Paul: It's my belief the price is $500 for your Base configuration Matte Box, how much will the optional side flags and bottom french flags cost?
BRIAN: Prices not yet set on those. We should have a new flush of information that will include this (and some of your other good questions). If the whole microMattebox is $500 you can assume the costs for add-on parts will be relative (i.e., we won’t charge $250 for a flag, for example)
Paul: It's my belief the price is $500 for your MicroRemote, how much will the optional motors and wired controller cost?
BRIAN: same here
Paul: How is the MicroRemote powered? By independent batteries (Such as AA's or it's own lithium cells) or from the camera or camera's batteries? Essentially I am wondering if it will be possible to power it from the same power source as all the other equipment on a camera rig.
BRIAN: The handheld controller is powered via AA batteries. The base station is powered via power tap, so you can power using your brick.
