Just got back from NAB and now that the Red buzz is wearing off and I've looked at my pics of the camera I noticed a potential problem which is the lack of physical audio pots. I am gonna be seriously bummed if this feature is buried in the UI or requires you to enter an audio mode on the back of the camera. Even the DVX 100 got this right...

The supergrip is the only physical option that I know of so far for adjusting audio levels.

The supergrip can set audio levels??! That sounds really cool but rather impractical as the operator would have to set the levels rather than the assistant who is usually the person who is moving around the camera when the sound jerk says he needs to make an adjustment seconds before rolling.

Yes the RED Supergrip can be used to adjust audio levels. That's mainly for the run and gun single operator application, at the other extreme is dual system sound where of course there is an external mixer.

There is also audio level adjustment from the multi-function joystick / pot on the back of the camera, but if you must have audio level adjustment available to a not sound guy / not cameraman, there is always the option of writing an app for a PDA and adjusting it via wireless....

Do RED intend to release an SDK for controling various aspects of the camera via WiFi/USB?

P.S. great to meet you in person Stuart. Thanks for letting me take up so much of your time chatting.

In due course Nick.

Likewise. Its great to be able to meet those who are regular contributors on this board in person!

Hey Stuart, is there any word on when the Supergrip and Red motor may be available. End of the year, end of the summer?

I guess we will have to wait to see the implementation. Hopefully audio is a part of the inital enabled feature set.

I am scared to add another thing with batteries (a PDA) to the audio departments kit. Now we can spend the whole shooting day waiting for the audio to change batteries on each little device. :angry03:

Seriously though, virtual controls do not have the haptic benefits of a physical control. When you're on hour 14 of an 18 hour day a little muscle memory goes a long way.

Perhaps a physical level mixing accesory could be made to hook over USB and be mounted on a top plate?

YESSS!

If you don't have knobs, I'll certainly order from the first guy who offers them.

Going through menues to adjust audio-levels is kind of.... (insert whatever here) to a guy who comes from the audio department originally...

Yes, someone could do that too .....
