Hi,
Correct me if I'm wrong but what if you remove the legs from the red spider. Sure could look like a "professional pocket cam" to me. Picture this, the spider body could be something similar to a Silicon Imaging SI-2K MINI system and can operate in a similar fashion. Also, looks like you could slip two rods for support on the bottom of the spider.
Again, I could be totally off base here, but just makes you think "uhmm???"

I don't think you're off base with that... I'm not so sure on the ergonomics, would kinda be like holding a softball if you don't have rods and some form of handle system.

Yes that's true..but that's the same for the Silicon Imaging SI-2K MINI. The mini needs to be mounted on some type of support sytem. Who knows??

Slightly off-topic, I suppose, but I've always been curious about that Spyder.
Did it move at all or was it only show?
It sure would have been cool to see and photograph it moving ...

Tex doesn't move. He glows. And eats cameras.

With all the buzz around the Red One and Red mini, displays, projectors and all... Can I just have Red spider? I don't really care what it does as long as it has USB :)

what is it, by the way? saw tons of photos of it from NAB, just never saw a thread that explained it...

I know the question wasn't serious, but just in case, Jim did already deny this "spider-cam" theory on another forum:

I think the Red Spider started out as just a graphic art design without futher ambitions of becoming real-- someone on this forum saw it and offered to actually build it for the NAB booth- and Jim took him up on the offer.

I still think it would be a nice addition to the RED.com store. Doesn't need to be terribly useful. Maybe a status display of Redcine or Final Cut rendering process.

that's hilarious. I saw a couple mystified people peering through the acrylic at it. you could hear them thinking... "knives? it has knives?"

Hey it's not like I'm proposing a line of RED staff action figures. I don't even know if it'll help with sales. I just know that this thing, maybe a little smaller on an editing desk will look mighty cool. Even if it displays the percentage of rendering complete with a pie-chart like graph behind it and a pulsating glow when done? hmm. And it can open 4 letters at once :)

Ok, I can't keep up with all the posts on reduser.net How does Jim have time for multiple forums? He sure knows how to make a guy feel lazy!

Correct. It started out as a tee shirt design I did a year or two ago, then migrated to the snowboard artwork, and eventually to its current physical form.

I see it like this...if you have a machinery...a bunch of creative people working in total opposite of strict, robotic environment...and a guy like Jim in charge...
...sooner or later you're going to see some crazy stuff coming out of there.
Revolution is not possible without a dose of madness. Without a rebellion.
Pure knowledge isn't enough, no matter how large it is.
When I think about it, I see RED spider as creature of rebellion.
As a symbol of open mind to pure creative thought.
"Because I can."
And if this is just a start, just imagine what kinds of mad futuristic devices await us in the future....I'll love seeing the fruits of this revolution.

When I first saw the Red Spyder, I thought you could mount the camera on it.

Wow Omen it sounds like you work here.
You nailed it on the head, "because we can".

I think Jim's words about Tex on opening day were something like "Dedicated to design beyond function or reason". How Badass is that?!!

I posted this a while back on another forum. Seems its time to bring it out again. ;)
Could Jonny Qwest be where the RED "Tex" Spider inspiration came from?

So KAI where can I get one of these T shirts?
I reckon there'd be a market for an actual model too. Like a RED tiki, what a f$ckin cool design.
