I saw this on cinematography.com and thought to myself ...huh?

"I was at the RED screening Thursday and when I got into the screening room I was shocked to see that one of the RED bouncers came in, asked a man to see his badge, and as soon as he revealed that he was with SONY they asked him to leave. Am I wrong or isn't this highly against NAB policy? I thought this convention was supposed to be an open forum. What is RED's reasoning for this? As a student I love everything that they are doing with the industry but I have to say that I found this more than a little out of whack."
Richard Salsburg-
Anyways...just curious if there was any truth to this.

Well, there could have been many reasons for him asking, if that were the case. For all we know the bouncer could have caught him doing something earlier, but that guy just saw what happened from that point on. Sort of like the Rodney King beating.
Speculation, speculation. It could mean all kinds of stuff... "He got a SONY badge, thats got to be the reason!" come on..

It makes no sense whatsoever.
First: the short was an open session to anyone at NAB. As long as you were willing to wait on line (I waited for about 35 minutes) you could watch the movie. Then for some competitor in the industry watching that movie wouldn’t give you many comparison elements. It’s for the sake of curiosity.
Second: In a few months there’ll be REDs on the market. They can be rented and taken apart if that is what Sony really wants, and Jim understands that really well.
Finally: I’m absolutely sure many engineers, salespersons, directors… from Panasonic, Sony, Panavision, Dalsa, etc… watched that movie. Not so hard!

I don't get it either, maybe it was a Pee-Wee Herman kind of thing. That wasn't really appropriate at the RED venue:biggrin:

The dude probably flashed an exhibitor badge to one of the bouncers so he could cut the line and walk in. He subsequently got ejected and had to stand in line like everyone else. That would be my theory... Assuming the story is even remotely accurate or true.

We had over 25 Sony employees visit our booth with no difficulty. We let them in, even though the show rules don't require you let competitors in... then it got ugly. When it got disrespectful, we turned the last ones away.

I was at the second screening on Wednesday (my third viewing) where three
Sony Reps and one from Dalsa were sitting around me. After the screening
the three Sony Reps had their noses right up against the display cameras for
a considerable amount of time time and no one from Red seemed bothered
by their overly attentive inspection.

If the Sony people couldn't act responsibly and appropriately, they have no business being in the Red booth. I do the same thing in my shop. For me I've had problems with pushy salespeople - I politely listen at first, but if they cross the line, they're outta here!
I'm glad RED had bouncers, because the product is so good it's whipped up a hornet's nest . . . . . fear breeds stupidity!
Thanks for the straight scoop, Jim.

I suppose if the guys from Sony were causing trouble, they had to go.
But I don't think it's appropriate to take an us vs them attitude towards the competition.
Let's keep the discussion high minded; RED has more than enough ammo to win without aggression and FUD.

The "father of the Genesis" was in the RED booth on Wednesday for quite some time. I actually had a chance to chat with him for awhile. Nice guy. No problems.

Things like this happen and then are over. It really isn't necessary to blow up ever detail for everyone around the world to read about. Someone got out of line, in our opinion, and we asked them to leave. Simple as that. Let's move on.

I agree with you that we need to be above engaging in distatseful tactics. But seriously, I haven't heard ANY FUD (casting fear, uncertainty, doubt on competitors without basis) come from RED. I have heard PLENTY of FUD from Sony over the years, and now plenty about RED.
I've dealt with Sony Professional since 1990 in Japan and the US, and their corporate culture seems to be very arrogant. They did have a lock on VTR's and reference-grade monitors, and to some extent cameras, and their attitude toward the user was that we have no choice but to buy and use Sony. Panasonic, on the other hand, has actively sought feedback from our community as to what we need and what we value.
And RED so far is becoming the gold standard in valuing customers and considering our needs. Anyone on this forum knows this. Whenever someone here says something unreasonable about their competitors, RED people jump in to keep the conversation civil, as do the rest of the forum members.
I use Sony, Panasonic, and many other manufacturer's products as we all do. It's not us versus them for me, it's about what I need. Sony's arrogance and FUD towards RED shows where they're at. We do have a choice. It's time Sony faces this fact.
(EDIT) Sorry to add one more post, hehe. Yes, let's move on.

good and professional attitude.
tradeshows can put lots of stress on people.
many good employees are emotional about their products, no matter which manufacturer. its like teams in sports.
some then can get to tough if they are leapfrogged by the competition.
