Hi All
I have previuosly shot on red with audio for US broadcast at 23.98fps, but when I import in to Avid it shows up in the timeline as 30fps material, when I conform material from edl using 23.98fps my audio from avid offline is out of sync. Now I am sure this is pretty basic stuff for you guys in the US but in the UK it is all a bit unfamiliar to me. Does anyone have a good explanation of why this happens and what the correct procedure is when dealing with 23.98 footage.
Thanks

I'm not sure I follow all your steps.

You offlined in Media Composer? What did you online in?

The Media Composer project was setup as 30fps?

That is the main question, are you offlining in HD or SD? Posting in HD streamlines the process since there is a 1:1 relationship between frames, timecode, and other counts. While Avid is great at managing multiple timecodes at different rates within a project, it needs to be properly set up to do so.

Michael,

DO you mean to say that can we work with 23.98 and 24fps in same timeline. I believe you want.

I've another question regarding this thread.

I shot with 24fps @ 4k 2:1. I would like to do offline using Avid MC3.0. The sound was recorded on the camera fed via protools which was the master live sound.

On what project framerate I need to work. I tried opening 720p23.976 and sound drifts and out of sync. When I tried to open in 1080p24 the sound perfectly syncs.

And also another question regarding Avid. Why there is no 720p24 in Avid?

RED really works best in an Avid project that is a 1080p/23.976, 24, or 25 depending on recording speed. We have not created a 720p/24 project at this time due to priorities and not a whole lot of requests. If there is a big demand then it is something we would consider adding.

There are 23.976 and 24 NTSC as well as 24 PAL for those working in standard def. The question for the above issue where 29.97 in the QT fps rate is where the project was NTSC or not.

Michael,

What about my Project. Do I need to work in 23.976 or 24.

23.976 or 24 depends on the frame rate used in production. Especially if sound was done double system and will be synced within Avid. Just make sure they are the same. Basic rule:

23.976fps picture and 48kHz audio = 23.976p project
24fps picture and 48.048kHz audio = 23.976p project
24fps picture and 48kHz audio = 24p project
