Who knows about differences ?
Has anybody experienced both ?

From what I can tell, Rubbermonkey is perfect if you want to quickly prepare and output the footage with a single look for external grading, while Crimson brings your edit into RedCine for you to time each clip yourself individually.

I might be wrong, but that's the impression I get.

Don't forget that monkey extract reads rsx, so you can grade in redalert before you export if you want.

I think the main difference is:

Crimson = Best FCP workflow (finishing in FCP) - uses XML
Rubber monkey = DPX workflow (for grading solutions) - uses EDL

Both are great. And fairly cheap.

True, but in my opinion you wouldn't really use this for clip by clip grading, more to give an overall curve to your complete shot list.

But good point all the same.

Crimson has a choice of two workflows. In addition to the Redcine workflow it can also batch all you footage through Redline and has facilities for bulk changes to color settings and framing.

Monkey Extract is for rendering footage, using only the cuts contained in an EDL. It does that one thing quickly and simply.

Basically we built it to get footage from Final Cut to Color, but because any edit software can output an EDL, it supports Avid, Premiere, Vegas, whatever you want.

Because all grading systems can load an EDL, it supports every grading system.

I can't comment too much on Crimson because, I'm ashamed to say, I've never tried it! But I know that Ian has built in a bunch of other features that you may find useful.

Ian,

I'm loving Crimson - any word on it's development?
(just curious!)

thanks.

I used both Crimson and Monkey Extract in couple of projects.

I don't find any difference between them instead Crimson supports only XML and Monkey Extract does only with EDL.

The problem both have not yet addressed is the solution for Avid.

The edit I done with Avid needs to be imported in to FCP via Automatic Duck Pro Import for Crimson.

For Monkey Extract, Avid EDL support have some issues and I am in discussion with Monkey Extract team in reporting the bugs I faced till date.

Both products are great solution at affordable price.

Next version is completely rebuilt from the ground up. I will release it for testing before it becomes the official release.... sooooon.
