This seems to be a typical RED thing:
- product announced, will be shipping next month!
- we have a little problem but no worries, we ship with a slight delay!
- months go by, not a word anymore...

Wrapping up alpha testing on the upgraded CF reader/writer that will go hand-in-hand with the new 16 GB CF CARDS. We hope to begin fulfilling backorders in the next couple of weeks. Note that Build 17 will include full support for 16 GB CF CARDS.
To quote Jarred from another post: "We have the option to either cut corners (i.e. shorten QA or bring in less qualified Techs to do the QA ) or just stick with it and battle through and hope the customer will appreciate our diligence. To us, cutting corners on things like Storage media is just not a good idea..."

Thanks Brent, sure I wouldn't want you to cut corners. But my complaint is about not about engineering but about not giving any information what is going on. Many of us have ordered the 16GB cards months ago and actually need them on a production. And I don't really understand how it is possible that Jim says in June they will be shipping in 4 weeks and 3 months later you are still alpha testing. Can't you ship the 16GB cards without the CF module first?
On the RED website the 16GB is available and you can just buy them. In the delivery schedule by Big Jon it says shipping starts in August. In the forum it is impossible to find the latest information.
I really think it would be good if RED would give a clear overview of the status of products on their website. Something like the Big Jon post but more clear and obviously up to date. Lot's of things in that post are scheduled for end of summer '08 which I would think has already gone...

Personally, I think they just announce things too early. I know lots of fanboys want to hear what's coming and I get the genuine feeling that Jim & company want to share the news. However, it seems things get announced way too early when too many variables are out there that influence shipping dates or deliverables.
I like the way Apple does it. Keep a good secret...usually when they announce they say "available today" or it's soon after. (iPhone was a HUGE exception.)
There are no bad intentions by RED here, for sure, but it drives me a little crazy, too. I would LOVE to cut down on the NON-announcements of "we got something great coming but we won't say anything about it," too. I think, from following these boards, RED is hopefully starting to understand whatever little marketing bump they get, that it breeds a lot of frustration, too.
Every guy knows...teasing is cute for about 30 minutes. Then it gets old real fast. :-)
Still waiting on my 16 gig CF cards, RED Raids, 50-150mm lens...

I like knowing what is coming down the line. It helps plan ahead.
With Apple you could buy something and the next day something comes out that would have worked better for you.
Please keep it open.

As I mentioned in another thread the other day, we are working on inventory/availability tags for RED.com. So that will give you exactly what you guys are asking for - coming soon, limited availability, on backorder, available to ship now, etc.
Also, Summer 2008 ends officially on 9/22 when Fall begins :)

You'll get a new reader-module when you buy the 16g cards, for free, for those who already have a cam! New cams will come with the upgraded module, ready to do war, correct?

Sorry, don't mean to be insulting with the term. But when people get overly excited when Jim posts "something new is coming" and that is all...I would say "fan boy" is a good term. :-)
What was the latest? "Epic...is changing."
Wow, brilliant. Everyone goes nuts and they know absolutely nothing. I kinda' cracks me up, to be honest. But what doesn't make me laugh is when dates are missed and I have to pay due to the delays. I have rented enough RED Raids and lenses due to the delays, that I could have ordered fully new ones. So...you can imagine I'm frustrated.
That's fine if you like the teases. I just would rather things get announced when the information of delivery is more accurate and known. That's it.

This is going to be an exciting week! The RED Flash drive, the 18-85, the 300 RED PRO and the 7" LCD are coming!
Okay, you have me on that one, I'll buy you a beer if this is going to happen

Sorry to labour the point but do the 16gb cards work with the current system (or did I understand a previous post correctly that they are planning to upgrade your cf reader if you buy a 16gb card?)

I don't wanna stick my nose on this discussion but...
Isn't the 16GB CF status on the website PLACE DEPOSIT only?
I thought PLACE DEPOSIT was only for products not yet available.

Lol, I think Red goes to work every day and says,
"hey we are behind,
this didn't work out like planned....
but at least we are not like Birger..."
The Birger thread isn't a thread any longer, it is becoming a novel.
I think with the 16GB cards somebody jumped the gun.

Red is just steeped in the Beta testing spirit of things. We are know what Beta testing is like.

As Beta testers we all have to deal with some shit. So put on those rubber gloves and keep smiling, lol.

Actually not 100%. I ordered a battery and charged in a separate order as well but since this shipment is listed by fedex as 1lbs I think its the cards.

Pictures!
Installation is pretty straightforward, some screws and two cables, nothing difficult. The 16GB cards work as expected and in no time it is as with any computer upgrade: you get used to it and forget how things were before. Still it is very satisfying to know that now you can do the same speeds as the harddrive.
One nice bonus you get is that the 16GB cards unmount faster than the 8GB - I'd say twice as fast. Just hope RED used better paint than with the 8GB cards...

Yep,
Same here. Easy install.
I actually got the cards and the board before Thanksgiving, but yesterday was my first chance to install.
I'm assuming they'll ramp up and get the cards out to everyone fairly soon.
In the meantime, know that they work as advertised. Thank you Red Team.
Cheers,
Harry

Thanks,

If you are #3910, I just checked the invoice date and it shipped with the 16 GB CF card-supported reader/writer.

They send you a new CF Reader. You do have to ship the old one back to RED.

That's what it says in the email that RED sends out informing you that they are about to ship you the items.
"After swapping your RED CompactFlash reader/writer(s), please send back your old reader/writers to RED at your earliest convenience. When you are ready, please contact me for an RMA number. If we do not receive your old CF reader/writer within (30) days of shipping your upgraded reader/writers, we will invoice you for the new reader/writer."

Yeah, the excerpt from the backorder email above that Mike Burton posted was correct. We do request the old CF reader/writer back. Mainly, we don't want a camera being used, operator bending a pin, then thinking there was a spare reader to put in - and then wonder why the 16 GB CF CARDS don't work :)
Now that they are off of backorder, we don't have a "your cards are ready" email with that copy, so we have instructed BOMB SQUAD reps to let the customer know :)
Thanks, BC

Are the 16GB cards really off backorder? Because I have two of them that show in My_Account as backordered. I just ordered them last week, but figured I'd ask. Or are we waiting for more of the updated card readers?
Just wondering...

My number is 4257.
In addition to being shipped out with any order of 16 GB CF CARDS - Cameras shipped on October 27, 2008 or after as well as cameras that have gone through the RED ONE upgrade program will already have the 16 GB CF CARD-friendly CompactFlash reader/writers installed.

It was a clean cutover, guys. Camera invoiced Oct 27 or after, it has the current gen CF reader/writer in it. If invoiced before that date it does not unless it has gone through the upgrade program or has had 16 GB CF cards shipped for it.
