You may have seen Adobes internally distributed video on the Beta integration of RED into Premier http://mbsdirect.com/redone/
The work flow is very impressive (although Dave looks baked FHA to me) and leaves all the other players for dead.
So what are Apple and Avid going to do about this?
Do you think they are concerned? that because of this vastly better workflow (those of us shooting RED) have to really consider going across to Premier.
On the surface this looks like a master stroke on Adobes part. I for one am uncomfortable with Premier, but the workflow is so vastly superior (particularly in terms of time) than any of the others I suspect I will have no choice, but to make that decision. I suppose in a way it is no less painful then the one I made to move from my beloved Avids to FCP, its the same moment but different reasons.
Lets take Apple first.
They have already invested a considerable time and money in partnering with RED.
Because of that, one would have expected something like this from them first, when the SDK was announced, sort of "thanks chaps, heres you bonus knock yourself out", but no not a peep from Apple.
So they are either about to announce something that leaps over Adobe in spectacular fashion or they are done with ProApps. Its a bit of a litmus test on their intentions if you like.
So what could their spectacular announcement be?
How about an exclusive GPU card that has hardware 4K debayering on the fly, with display to a 4K 40 inch display.
So to Avid
They will attempt to protect their Hi end boxes so they will want to bake in the .R3D into one of their resolutions. If they persist with that position that excludes them from this discussion as the time overhead in the transcode and the complicated way back to the RAW file is impracticable as it is now.
If Avid offered the same functionallity as Adobe and FCP continued to ignore ProApps I would change back to Avid "in a heart beat"
So who is to be? that takes over the RED world, right now it looks like, Adobe, Premier has just gone big time and is about to play with with the "Big Boys" Apple and Avid the clock is ticking.
