Somebody I met at the show brought up an issue with RED that I hadn't thought of. It actually may not be an issue, but I don't know the answer and never got to ask the RED team.
since the camera isn't tape-based how do you review clips in the field? Can you access the clips from the harddrive like when using a Firestore or do we have to build some complex video village to handle this?
Thanks,
Jason

I am guessing that its similar to how you can view clips in the HVX, if it is, then cool, because I really like that feature.

However, I am pretty sure that RED has a better "button" workflow compared to the HVX, its really annoying using the playback buttons, etc. to look through clips, deleate, select....

If we can review like on the HVX that would be just fine, but I can't remember ever hearing about how it might work. It would be limiting to watch playback if you only had the EVF, but not intolerable, because it's a sharp piece of machinery. :)

OR you could just tell the VTR guy to put down the donut and play the last take back for you.

I could've sworn someone at the booth said, "Yes, you can monitor playback from camera, and select thumbnails of clips from the LCD or EVF."

I was to out of it to ask about REDONE on-camera "playback" thru the evf/lcd at NAB - a very good question though? Anyone ask that question?
I did ask an Apple engineer this specific question, "In the field, when I plug my Red drive into my laptop (macbook pro), select Prores from the menu options in FCP 6 can I preview the clips?"
What he said and showed me was EXTREMELY COOL and way more than I expected would be available for the RED workflow so soon this year (July?) thanks to great work and foresight by the Redteam and Apple.
The simple answer was yes. The long answer was very cool and included, clip and data management, time line and canvas viewing and a complex answer about an elegant and simple solution that allows defining the Prores parameters, e.g., 720, 1080 and all the frame rates and i's and p's that go with it. Again, I was not operating on all cylinders that morning and do not recall all the tech specs but I do know Mike Curtis, who was standing right there listening to my question and the answer, got it all.
Mike or Gibby - confirm, correct and elucidate please?

Yes, the RED ONE can provide playback from any of the attached digital media. That means color playback via EVF, LCD and/ or HD-SDI / HDMI ports.

That's exactly what we needed to hear. Thanks Stuart!

Since the footage is RAW, what will the white balance and exposure be set at for monitor playback in the field?
