View Full Version : Feature request: 1 frame digital slate

A request for a feature that would really help in post - a digital slate.

This would be an option in camera, that would render data onto the bottom of the first frame.
If it was generated after the take has been cut, then you could show the out timecode. If not, you could generate it on record and have the start timecode at least.
This would be awesome for editors etc. If there's not enough CPU cycles left in the Red One, then it would be a great Epic feature.
It could also show ISO or other data...
Thoughts?

Pure Genius.

sounds like something that should have been done a long time ago. Is there any reason not to do something like this?
I agree with Markp. Genius :)

This is why Reduser.net exists.

requested it over 2 years ago. Still no implementation, this could be easily included into redline.... it doesn't even have to be done on the red one itself.

that's true too! This should totally be implemented :)

I believe this can be implented in RedAlert / RedLine / RedCine instead on Red One Camera. And its possible with the Red Apps when creating offline dailies and why not Monkey Extract have an option for Offline dailies and implement this using RedLine.

You could incorporate it into Monkey Extract, but that would only help if you're transcoding the footage prior to edit. Ideally it would be in the R3D becaues hopefully we won't have to transcode some day soon. :w00t:

Other digital recording systems like the S.Two implemented this a long time ago and it's extremely useful. It was requested on the forums a handful of times very early on in the Red development and I'm surprised it hasn't been incorporated in one way or another. Please give us this feature along with my one other most requested, completely unrelated feature, a full frame waveform.

It would be lovely.
I doubt it could be put into our current cameras via firmware. It sounds like code that would go into RED Alert / Rushes.

the problem with the s.two slate is that it is completely black and you can't visually see the first frame of the image... the mockup however, would be sweet.
Our coder is also telling me that it wouldn't be trivial to add this to monkey extract, it would need to be a redline feature... Deenan?

Great idea, I hope the RED team is listening. (and that the hardware is technically capable of implementing the idea).

Why should we listen? It's already in the next version :)

How cool is that. . . our wish is their command.
Here's to my next, surely-soon-to-fulfilled wish. . . IMAGE FLIP! (I want the ability flip the image on the monitor, the ability to flip it in the camera, or both, if desired.)
Is that in the next build, too?

You guys are too cool... If I were to get a real job the RED would be the first place I'd apply (I've rejected Cirque du Soleil so take it as a compliment). where do I send my resume? I might get tired of the live show touring and designing overly complicated technical illusions.

As long as it is available for mac users and pc users if it is not put into the camera itself.

I can imagine it's very rewarding work. Since we're throwing ideas out there and you guys are listening it would be a nice feature to be able to connect a keyboard to the camera and type in real slate info (roll, scene, take, etc...).

Or, in this particular case, their command is our wish ;)

Heh Deanan too cool, just from experiance as well with the stwo, if its possible have it be a replacement slate ie overwrites the first frame, making it do any kind of generated preslate really messes interacting with the rest of the world. Also the option of an end slate is really great as well, it can totally save your ass when getting into really strange file conversion realms when attempting to adapt to really strange workflows.
