One thing is clear....2007 will be the year that more shooters switch to HD. I think all manufacturers sold or will sell a bunch of HD cameras in 2007. I looked at every major booth. Next year RED may not even need a booth at NAB. Between the footage that will be posted by the first 3000 cameras and the on-going buzz that is created in all the media outlets for the next year......RED could place cameras at Apple, AVID, Adobe, crane companies, 3rd party vendors etc.....Or RED would probably need a booth like Apple had.
Just huge with multiple displays and hundreds of demo artists....
So I guess 2008 will be the NAB debut of the RED "Pocket Camera" I guess that will be when RED captures the rest of the camera market?

Hopefully enough cameras were ordered to prove the concept and keep RED motivated to continue their revolutionary 4K business model.

Ya, no doubt a RED professional 4K compact camera will be an excellent tool for us filmmakers - I would guess it's ready before NAB '08 though since the challenging electronic and software engineering is already done. I'll be ordering one as soon as the specs are announced.

The rest of the camera market is quite diverse though and no single camera meets every need. Network tape based sports, news and sitcoms to name a few are heavily invested and entrenched in HD tape based technology and will be slow to change. It will be cool to see the first mini-series or MOW shot in 4K for HD broadcast. Maybe one of the hit series producers will be persuaded by a progressive DP to switch to tapeless 4K with the REDONE.

There will continue to be an evolution in camera design by all the majors with a growing demand in the prosumer under $5K market driven by the content demand for non HD venues like the web, cell phones and who knows what else. Who knows, maybe the trickle release philosophy of the majors will change now that RED is about to ship - but I doubt it.
