Deakins has an interesting, sort of stream-of-consciousness type article in the new AC dealing mainly with the embrace of DI. The article is all over the map in terms of content, but tucked away inside are some real gems, including an amusing anecdote about Conrad Hall, and insights like this:
"Every shot I have ever made has been a compromise in some way. That's a sweeping statement, but true nonetheless. No image has ever been as good as the one I envisioned in my mind's eye. Maybe that's what keep me going: just once, I want to see that image onscreen!"
--Roger Deakins
I think we can all relate to that. Although I will say, with photo stills, I DO end up sometimes with a better shot that I had imagined. It's usually thanks to a lot of luck.
